• TravelEAR Abroad: Stay the Night in This Ancient Cave

Welcome back, travelEARS! Today we are going to a really cool Italian hotel. Welcome to Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita.

When travelEARS see this hotel, it may just remind them of the spooky caves and jail scene from Pirates of the Caribbean!

    About This Hotel

    Matera, Basilicata, Italy
    Typical Cost:
    $100 / night

At this hotel, guests can stay in the restored caves in the ancient Basilicata village of Matera in Southern Italy. The hotel is located in a place that has traditionally not been very popular with tourists. But the village was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and this hotel is a great place for people to stay.

In order to operate as a hotel, the site was meticulously taken apart, entirely wired and piped and finally reassembled with each stone replaced in its original location. There are 18 total rooms in the hotel. These rooms are divided into 3 standard rooms, 9 superior rooms, and 6 suites.

Standard rooms and superior rooms have double beds and showers, although the superior rooms are slightly larger. Suites contain vaulted ceilings, large windows overlooking the valley, king-sized beds, baths, and showers. The walls are bare and the furniture is simple, allowing guests to fully appreciate the natural beauty around them.

When you arrive, you’ll be led down to your cave where a large bowl of cherries, a bottle of chilled water, and roaring fire welcome you. Clusters of cream-colored pillar candles are lit as dusk falls, making this place beautiful as well as romantic. A stay in this hotel is truly unforgettable.

See you next week as we continue to take you, the TravelEAR, Abroad.
