Again, the example of Pirates: the outside doesn't have to match the inside. The theming of the land should take precedence over over-selling the ride. What a delight to find surprises inside that couldn't be discerned from the outside.
Having "colorful murals of the Toy Story characters" outside sounds too cartoonish to me. I picture something like this:
That doesn't take me to a different time and place, something period references would do.

i agree exclub.
having a show building with painted murals and bright colors sound a bit too cheesy and an easy way out and does not help the land.
i think the victorian look would be very neat an eventhen lots of lighting aorund the edges of the building will help enhance the theming of the pier

Pirates has an New Orleans themed exterior which is where the ride begins on the inside. The outside does match the inside.
If the exterior of the ride does not reflect what's inside, but does reflect the theme of the land, then that ride does not belong in that land.
It sounds cartoonish because the ride is cartoonish.
They don't have the Chinese Theater as the Monsters Inc facade just because it fits the Hollywood theme.

Its a new attraction developed for the paradise pier area of DCA. It will also be cloned for MGM studios in florida.
They are both under construction. The one in DCA will open later than MGM since they need to build a massive show building from scratch. The one in MGM is be fitted inside the old Millionare attraction building.
The Toy Story Mania is now the official name. It will consist of vehicles that will sit four people back to back. Fromt the sound of it there will be two vehicles joined together to make it an eight passenger attraction.
According to the tsoryline people will go thru an emersive queue and meet up with state of the art Mr. Potatoe head animatronic that will be capaable of pulling parts of from himslef and interact with guests.
People will then board the vehicle and supposedly be shrunk to the size of a toy. The vehicle will then go thru several show scenes depicting various midway games that are classic to old piers. The twistis that the games will have Toy story characters as part of the theming.
each guest will be given 3d glasses and the vehicles will have guns or other target contraptions that will be used to hit targets thruout the attraction. Think Buzz lightyear but with a 3d element.
What makes this target attraction much diferent than Buzz's flat cardboard targets is that all the targets will be animated. Pixar is workingon creating actuall animated sequences that will be projected on themed screens thruout the attraction.
The projections plus the 3d glasses will give the characters a three dimensional illusion. The attraction will also have other 3d effects which will supposedly include smell blasts of air and other elements (imagine the 3d movies they have already but in a moving attraction)
Some of the effects will include things coming back at you. for exampe lets say you throw a dart and you miss the target. The dart might bounce of the target board and fly back straight at you. You would feel the blast of air of the dart flying towards you as you duck to avoid it.
There is several concept art in the Disney posts with very rough preliminary artwork.

I think what exclub is trying to say is that the attraction building does not need to have cartoon characters plastered outside of the building to make it fit the interior.
Remember the theme of the attraction is a Midway Game area with Disney characters.
As long as the outside fits the themed element of a Pier (which in this case many piers had victorian architecture) there shouldn't be a need to plaster the building with cartoon colors and drawings. The sign of the attraction should be enough.
the pIrates of the Carribean has a New Orleans style buidlign to fit its land and it may have a bayou at the beginning but nowhere on the outside do you have pirates painted on it or much of anything that connects it to the pirates (well at least it didn;t, not sure now with pirate invasion)

It doesn't necessary have to have characters it was just an idea.
The bottom line is the exterior should match the theming of the ride. Toy Story Mania does not have a Victorian theme thus should not have a Victorian themed exterior. If the Pier has a Victorian theme then the ride does not belong there.

if we do that then should the peter pan attraction be removed since it takes place mostly in Neverland yet the outside is themed to match the rest of fantasyland's village.

DCA Victorian... uhm... Mictorian, I mean.
Nothing Victorian about the ride? Have you ever seen a Midway Pinocchio85? Coney Island around the turn of the century or another beachfront Midway? That's exactly what it would need. Not a goofy looking one, but a well themed one like Disney's Boardwalk resort or Del Coronado look...
It'll fit the time period since DCA will be themed to a "period" California around the time Walt came here and before... just wait a year or so and you'll see. Hell, wait three years and you won't believe what you see...

Each Fantasyland ride has distinct architectural style that matches the country and film of each ride. Peter Pan has some very English touches to the exterior.
The exterior of Mania has to have some reference to the Toy Story theme inside. Otherwise how will people know what's inside? That can be done without making it too cartoonish. Believe me, I'm the last one who wants the Pier to become Toy Story Land.
The concept art shows that the ride already bears a striking resemblance to the Pier. The game awnings and hanging lights are almost identical to the one's outside. The ride was designed with the Pier's theme and atmosphere in mind.
