It would be pretty funny to have walk around characters of a Strongman, the bearded lady, and a Dog Faced Boy, or something along those lines.

A Little Mermaid themed Paradise Pier? No thanks. I just don't see the two going together.
The Pier should be a California themed Pier. It doesn't need a movie tie-in.

I think it could take cues from the Little Mermaid in terms of certain designs, but I agree, they do not need to make it completely themed to the movie. It should look like a pier, but it should take you back to another period in California history.

i think you are misunderstanding. the pier would not be a "little mermaid" themed pier but would have subtle references to the movie. Mermaids were often used in seaside piers. Why wouldn't a few references to a Disney character that has an ocean theme not be appropriate?
i wouldn't want to see a full blown mermaid land like the one in TDS.

It wouldn't be appropriate because the Little Mermaid had nothing to do with California and wouldn't fit with what's already there. The ocean in the film is clearly not the Pacific Ocean. I wouldn't want to see any references to the film no matter how subtle. The connection between PP and the film is very weak.
King Triton's Carousel doesn't bother me because it's themed to the Little Mermaid in name only.

I think this idea that every single thing needs to be related to California is really not relevent. The land could easily fit the parks theme and whatever is within the land could easily have references to Disney. The park after is Disney's.
Tokyo Disney sea is a greate example of that. All the lands relate to the parks theme and it has a Disney flair to it.
All Disney parks have to have references to their large family of characters, that is what people expect and what makes money.
It is the same arguement that was brought up with bugsland. "It does not fit the California theme" of course it does. It is about California's argriculture with a Disney twist.
Besides do you actually think that people would go around pointing out that the ocean in "The little mermaid" was not the pacific ocean?
The reality is that the pier needs to be liven up. The best way would be to make it more energetic and add a few combinations of attractions to get some energy going. The best thing for Disney to do is to use their brand and intertwine it with the main theme and i am sure that is the whole reason for adding "Midway Mania" to that corner of the park. An attraction with a known brand of characters that will liven one corner of the pier.
