Well, the real show will be in 3-D, the show will look different depending when you stand, and if you have normal vision, will have depth..

as someone that has done plenty of lenticular work, i would probably say that the effect that they were trying to achieve originally was not accomplished. Lenticular work is not easy to create and many things could effect the final product another issue could have been the kind of lenticular substrate used. Using the correct lenticular lens when the images are printed could create an amazing animted effect. The finer the lens the better the effect.
I also wonder if after it was installed they realized that the sunlight subdued the images and made them look flat.
A holagraphic image would probably work better under that kind of lighting and give an effect of more depth.

If the fountains are used just in the right way, I believe they could produce images that seem 3D. Here's an example from the Athens Olympics Opening Ceremony (@ 2:33):
I believe the the art in the Cellar conveys a certain dimensionality to the show, if just because it's much more complex than a single flat-ish mist screen. This is probably also why Ismael has said the show is designed to be viewed from the viewing area only. You physically can view it from other areas, but parts may be obscured or warped, and you won't get the intended effect.“We want to give people more than what they expect and if we do, they will always come back and they will enjoy coming to see what we're doing.” - Walt Disney

Perhaps MM would stay open because it isn't that close to the pier. Maybe also Mailboomer and the Little Mermaid ride (when it opens).

At the very least I think the lights for all the attractions on south side of the bay (and probably the lights for the entire Pier area as a whole) will have to go off or be drastically reduced so they don't overpower or distract from the show. I believe most of the lights around World Showcase at Epcot go off for Illuminations (though I don't know if it's all the lights even back into the countries, as I'm usually to busy watching the show). I don't know how this will affect the operation of the Pier attractions.
