I'm I the only one who thinks the new entry dosn't really match the buildings behind it? I mean in color style and such? Not really a huge problem but it kinda looks that way. Well I guess once its built I'll see.

06-23-2008 07:54 AM #83See I like the idea of DCA being sectioned off to the esplanade,I love the idea of having a more distinct seperation.I always felt the way the letters come out to the esplande didnt give a solid "ok we are in DCA now" feeling, similar to what you get when you enter DL.Well, supposedly the whole park is about California so it does make some sense.
What is nice about the letters is that they in a sense integrate the park entrance into the esplanade quite well. The new concept seems more along the lines of there being a big turnstile building that clearly sections off the new park.
I have always felt DCAs current entry is flawed, its always bothered me that the name DISNEYS CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE was not in the signage when you enter. Thats the name of the park, and while yes the park is themed to CA, its not called "CALIFORNIA". It would be equivilant to having big DISNEY letters outside of Disneyland, its just cheesy.
But I am in the minority here as it seems majority of Disney fans and casual guests love the letters, but for me I just find them ugly. Maybe if they weren't just plain old ugly concrete slabs Id like them more. Perhaps if they spruced them up so they didnt look like just huge hunks of cement.

i really thinkt hey should reconsider the idea about a fountain in the middle of the esplanade. Notice the picture above, even with the long lines due to the monorail pilon the position of a fountain would not interfer with early morning park lines.
A properly designed tall but oblong fountain in between both of the parks would give the ugly static concrete feel a much more inviting green natural feeling.
and while we are at it, although i like the fountain at the entrance of DTD, that thing needs to go and a much more apealing Disneylike fountain built in its place. Sorry but the orange tiled flat fountain screams cheap mall fixture

Its going to be interesting what aproach they take when it comes to the facades facing the esplanade. The lost and found as well as the restroom facility on the east side of DCA's entrance.
WIll they get something that matches the turnstyles or the rest of the parks new mainstreet?

The bricks need to be cleaned in the esplanade. Last time I was there, they were dirty, and there was gum on OUR brick.

I agree that some kind of definite transition point is needed, but on the whole I think the entrance needs to be more inviting and less monolithic. Both DLR and DLRP are in the unique position of having two parks close by connected by large walkways which I think present the design challenge of making the whole area work together to create a welcoming environment. DLRP I think does this quite well with the gardens leading up to the Disneyland Hotel and the bright open feel of the WDS entrance, with the main part of the park hidden by the three soundstages. The new design for DCA looks like on one side you will essentially have the quaint train station on a hill beckoning you into DL and on the other a bright blue monolithic art deco turnstile building sectioning off DCA.
Definitely agree. They only need to look at how much the HKDL fountain adds to their esplanade for some inspiration.
If they're going to go with such a "solid" entrance for DCA, it might also be an idea to use some landscaping or water features to bring it out a little into the esplanade and make it more inviting... maybe a California-themed fountain could even be located close to the DCA turnstiles rather than in the centre?

I hope the new turnstile entry gets another look. Art Deco is cool and all, but it is not welcoming. But it does match DHS in Florida which begs the question about the DCA name. Why make the entry so much like DHS?
