The connections are getting more and more tenuous, though. I've seen people quoting obscure references from a game on the Bug's Life DVD to prove the film was set in California and thus the land does fit the park's overall theme and now with Carsland these lines are getting similarly blurred to make it fit. In reference to the schematic Dlfreak outlined, they also now seem able to start at "Tomorrowland" and end up with "Monster's Inc. comedy club".

I'd be surprised. The entrance fits DHS perfectly as the whole entry area to the park features iconic mostly art deco architecture from around LA. The only reason they would change it would be to distinguish it from DCA but if that concerned them so much they'd have probably just designed a different entrance!

I did not say that at all. Monsters makes no sense in Tomorrowland at all, neither did High School Musical (except maybe for the Magic Music Days connection which they did not play up). I was referring to Disneyland with attractions like Pirates (of the Carribbean in New Orleans Square) and Buzz Lightyear (Astro Blasters in space). I don't speak much for WDW because I don't live in Florida.

That is true, but there is just something strange with the TDS tunnels. As if they don't match the architecture or something.

I prefer the Pan Pacific look for the Hollywood theme because the art deco look matches the Hollywood fashion so well. I almost wish that the new DCA gates will be a bit more of a California embodiment,or at least more of a LA union station feel.

I loved the covered trellis idea for the entrance.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that's what you were saying. What I meant to underline was that WDI has been making unusual thematic connections in recent years.

Bugs Life doesnt have to take place in California for it to fit the California theme, agriculture is the theme of the land, and bugs are part of agriculture. Its pretty simple and not really the HUGE stretch that some make it out to be.

As for Carsland, that movie is perfect for DCA. The whole premise behind the film was about getting to California, not to mention that car culture is a huge part of CA history. If any Pixar film belongs in DCA,its Cars, its a natural fit.

Now I know some of you will say "but Radiator Springs" isnt in CA, honestly that is splitting hairs. The rock formations, desert theme, etc all go very well with California and honestly the average guest isnt going to be too confused as to why Carsland is in DCA.

These 2 examples are pretty poor examples if you want to prove that WDI is getting lazy with themes. I think the Finding Nemo Submarines are the biggest stretch Ive seen in a long time. Firstly Submarines are not the future, theyve been around for over 60 years. Secondly, a cartoon fish has nothing to do with the future either, now THATS a stretch. But since its in Disneyland, nobody seems to be all too hard on it. DCA is held to a different standard.

I won't argue that Nemo is a stretch, but I don't get too bent out of shape about that as it's just one attraction and they had a ride infrastructure sitting there that really suited that theme. If they push the boundaries a little from time to time I don't really mind. I do think, though, that when they're given the overall theme "California" and what they come up with is A Bug's Life Land and Carsland it's clear that they're starting with a particular popular and recent film and working backwards to make it fit the park (tenuously). To reverse dlfreak's schematic (sorry, but it's useful!), it would seem to go: A Bug's Life>bugs>outdoors>agriculture>There are farms in California! Yeah, it can be tied, but you have to go in reverse and there are no references to agriculture in the film that i can remember.

But Nemo DOESNT suit the theme,it has nothing to do with tomorrow or science fiction. Nemo would have fit better themeatically at DCA's pier,at least thats themed to a beach!

As for Carsland, I really dont see how a land based on Cars doesn't fit with a California theme. That entire Route 66 subculture is a huge part of California, even the movie is based around getting to California. So thats a problem but a ride based on a talking clownfish in a land themed to the future is ok? lol come on man.

It's a very period specific architecture. Those sort of fins sticking up are that style. You'd see many more buildings with that style during the period. Certainly not all, and that buildings has become iconic, but the idea is to evoke the period more then the specific structure.

I honestly cant tell you diddly about the pan pacific and what it housed or anything, but i can tell you it is iconic streamline moderne architecture.

A wiki article on the style:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streamline_Moderne

It is not art deco (two entirely different design philosophies behind them) - it's sort of co-style that happened at the same time.
