Question Steps in Time at the Hyperion Theaer

I am wondering if anyone likes the Disney's Steps In Time show?

For those of you have seen the old show before preview days were over...do you like the old show or the new show?

    Love to hear your thoughts!

    Hi Michael,
I've had the opprotunity to see the show over and over and over and over again. I never did see the original version, but I can say that while the show is rather entertaining at times, it just doesn't feel like a disney production to myself and most people I've talked to.

The biggest eyebrow raiser was a Fairy Godmother wearing what could be considered a Go-Go dancers outfit. Red leather boots, really short skirt, and a top that went along with the boots.

The family behind me during the last time I went actually got up and left during the "I want to be like you" series with the mom aghast at the snake going up the female dancers leg and the almost harem like costumes.

While I admit that my family enjoyed the show, most of us agreed it just felt that this wasn't a disney production. It didn't have that safe family-ish disney quality. When the kid almost lets out a cuss word and the Godmother catches him, it just seemed kinda wrong. It seemed more like something you'd find in vegas rather then on Disney property.

I should also add that the last 3 times I've seen it there have been problems, the first time the monitors didn't all work above the stage, the second time they blew the bit where they are supposed to make some steps and a female dancer is supposed to walk on them and jump off, and the 3rd time, while going up the stairs on the outside of the stage to do the opening dance routine, one of the dancers tripped and ate it hard.

All but the screens were understandable, but you know what I realized, without the disney clips in the background, I was hard pressed to identify much of it with classic disney.

I will say this, I really do like the Hakuna Matata number probably the best, but on that same note, now that this production has a story and such, the ending number doesn't quite seem to fit with anything.

The old show, it was better for so many reasons.

I think Eisner's decision to redo it was a joke, yes it needed improvments, but he allocated way to much money way to late that was simply be wasted.

They have ruined what the whole theme of the show was meant to be, a tribute to Disney classics, now it's just about brothers fighting and learning to accept each other.

There were some slight improvements in the costumes, but they took out classic scenes.

Now I know why there was so much debate about no bathrooms in the Hyperion. They were needed just so you can exit from this horrible new version if even for a moment.

    Shame on Eisner!

    Cool

Okay here we go, this may be long.

The first show was great. I thought the dancing was wonderful, and the singing incredible. I was taken back by the entire production. I loved how they varied dance..from the swing like style in Wanna be like you, to the isolations of Under the Sea, Hip hop for the lion king segment, and jazz for the final steps in time segment. I opening was just incredible, and I loved the whole snow white scene.

Now they replaced that wonderful scene with two brothers fighting over a remote control. Something I do not need to see anymore of. I see plent of children fighting in Disneyland. lol. They decided to ditch all of the singers, and pick up a boy who can sing, but not nearly as well as those who they canned. At least the fairy Godmother can sing..I just wish they would allow her to do a solo. GRR.

They ruined a lot of the dance scenes by taking out some of my favorite moves, and sticking the boy in the middle of it...making it VERY confusing. I kept wanting a cane to come pull him off the stage.

My favorite part of the entire show is the Lion King segment. I loved this section before, but now it is the only one where the boys and Godmother take a hike. I can simply go to the show to see that one number. It is great! Very good dancing..etc. The dancers are simply amazing in that number.

I think I may be the only one who liked the OLD costumes in the ending segment (steps in time) better. I feel the knew ones make them look like a bunch of dancing clowns. The hats look like they came straight from The Party Connection. LOL.

The poor dancers had to relearn all that choreography in short time, and dance around people that should not be there. I can not go on about how much I think they totally ruined this show! Okay I am done.

BTW, I think the dancers and singers are very talented...and I feel bad that they are subject to this horrible new show. They deserve credit for their talents.

Oh wow! I never realized it before, but you're right! The reason I liked the Lion King segment the best was because it was just the dancers and no boy or godmother or any of that! I just didn't put two and two together till now...hmmmmm.

I never saw the origional, but from what ive heard of it, I would have liked that one much more. The lame force-fed story line in this is neither origional nor appropriate for the theme of the show (or at least what it was supposed to be) It is a lame Disney story line with undisney everything else (which is the part i like!) I am very biaseed because i so wanted to see the Snow White scene, that is my fav movie. they lost the talented singers which was dumb. And the finale doesnt fit with the show. Its about Disney thaking the steps they have made along the way with their movies and songs. "with every song and every rhyme, Disney's making Steps in time...." How does that fit with the lame brothers?
I will probably see it again for the talented dancers, cool set changes, and fairygodmother, but other then that, i cant find any other reason to go.
Oh Alias, how I loved thee. I will miss you Sydney Bristow!

I finally saw the show yesterday for the first time. And well....was there even a plot? My head was shaking in disbelief almost the whole performance. I have no clue what they did to it but someone was on somthing when they thought this up...the only scenes i liked were the Under The Sea dance with the fish..but again the stupid brothers ruin it like in the middle of the dance and just was annoying, and the Lion King because the brothers and the godmother were gone. This needs to be exterminated and fast! It was an embarassment.
In a world of creativity there's no end to the possibilities.

Well... Hmm let me chime in...

I was talking to someone close to the production and they told me that when they came in to do the redo, the new choreographer wanted to "conceptualize" this prodcution. Now, the cast was very put off by this reaction, knowing that they were to retool this in under two weeks. The only thing is that it's a steady gig. I understand that feeling. As for the Show itself, I'm glad i got the old one on video. As for the new one... it hace nice parts... but makes the closing number (one of the best ones) now seem out of place. Oh well... I guess I'll just have to wait for another show...

I've said this before...and I'll say it again......

The guys dancing during Hakuna Matata were HOT!

That's pretty much what I liked about the show.

    Thumbs down

Perhaps my expectations were raised by the magnificent 2000 seat theater, but the production itself was embarrasingly bad.

The ridiculous and preachy storyline about a fairy godmother and two young brothers fighting over the TV remote is magnified by a series of absurd and poorly executed musical numbers accompied by irrelevant extracts from Disney's animated features.
The entire production should be retooled as quickly as possible before the summer rush.

The other production at the Backlot stage isn't much better. It's suppose to be a physical comedy, but there's woefully little comedy to go along with the high school gymnastics.
