There is the point that the captains are shooting in to the air to "scare off" the hippos. But I have also seen skippers shoot into the air and exclaime "Got the one in the tree, see I saved all your lives." And while we know hippos don't climb trees, this may prove to be upsetting to some children who are sensitive to killing anything.

I sort of have mixed feelings about it. I know it is part of our history and part of the joking of the Jungle Cruise, and yet...although it may be a small thing, is it another contribution to the desensitization of our youth to killing? Are we telling them it's okay to laugh at shooting something? Okay, so I'm weird and a little overboard lol.

I have always explained to my children that things in the entertainment industry are just pretend, and not real. They have been told that the things they see on the rides, are not real, but there for your imagination. For example, the ppl on the attractions are "toy people". I have never been on the JC where I have seen a child upset that anything was shot at or killed, but just upset because of the noise.

There are times when violence is used in ways that does desensitize children, but then it also seems in some ways we are kinda making our kids into wimps nowadays too. The days of kids being a little rough and rugged and mischevious seem to be dissappearing, and it seems like we expect our kids to be little adults sometimes. I think kids may have just got the whole "pretend" thing on the JC just fine and an adult didn't.
