Re: Where have all the originals gone?

I agree a bit with DL Adventurer

I mean it's not just that they're using Pixar characters for rides but they're starting to ignore the themes of the lands they're putting things in and force fitting themes ontop of stuff

I mean one could argue that Splash was fantasyland ish or movie based or didn't belong were it is. But in the end of the day Disney did a very good job with presenting the characters in a non cartoony fashion and they matched the themeing and most of all feel of the land up rather well with the surrounding areas and did their best to make the transition feel clean

I'm kinda growing discussed with the way they seem to have characters overwhelming lands now too a Bugs Land was a bit of overkill if you ask me

I don't mind it as an extension of the farm and I don't mind the 3D movie there but it's like it ate the entire land I wish it was more farm so they could have that coaster themed to crop dusting I'm always pitching

Disney's been killing off their diversity and muddling the feel that lands give you it seems

    I hope this changes soon

    Nail on the head....

Big rides do well without cartoon themeing.

BUT that isn't what Disney is adding to Disneyland now. They are adding smaller rides, to increase capacity cost effectivly. Disney's track record with non-cartoon, smaller rides is pretty horrid.

Cartoon based C-ticket rides are still popular after 50 years. Non-cartoon based C-ticket rides don't seem able to make it past 10-20 years.

I feel these attractions are somewhat like advertisement or promotional tools for the films. I hope to see less of this and more of stronger stories for rides that may not totally be influenced by a film's story, even if they have a character tie-in.

well said, It is fine if they do character based attractions but they should try to not duplicate the movie. Disney was also good in creating new characters and i think that they have given up on that. Remember captain EO, Tom Morow or how about figment Good characters that were or could be exploited but at the time the attractions were original. Figment is still very well liked and could actualy be used in future ventures both in television and attractions,

This made me think, and we've discussed it before, but I'm SURE rides like Indy, Tower, Rockin' were designed so the character or tie-in can be removed, perhaps if they lost the rights, leaving the attraction intact. You're correct that these attractions are kind of based on a character concept, but not the character or movie literaly.

well even things like my Little Mermaid darkride work because the focas is put more on you then the character (for those that remeber my plans actualy kept Aerial out of the ride as a whole and kept the focas of adventure on the guest)

I suppose that's the real trick to it rides need to have a since of adventure and that adventure is best placed on the guest (rather then on the character) even Snow White becomes fun for the few moments the Witch seems to be after you (forgetting the beginning and how the ending stinks)

Roger Rabbit even does this a bit with the Weasel pointing the dip at you and Roger saving you

of course then there's the other mistake I think you can make with rides and that is humor

it seems like Disney is trying a bit to put more humor into some rides were I don't think it needs to be. humor has the problem of becoming old and also has the problem of the same thing not being funny to all people. This's another area Sitch Escape has trouble (for example) not only is the darkness a bit frightening to children but the whole fart/burp jokes arn't funny to everyone and they get old very very fast and your no longer inclined to ride again

cuteness works to some extent (obviously since Small World is still around and is pretty popular even) but even there it needs a touch of adventure (Pooh is cute but to me it seems to get old because there isn't too much adventure in what little story the ride has if it had more of the hefelump scene in it that'd be at least a bit more exciting)

this's why I'm against stuff like Jim Hill's Muppet Movie ride idea (seems to me that not only do the Muppets have less appeal these days but would the ride really be Pee your pants funny 50 times over? since that's how Jim Hill is discribing it)

and that's also why I'm worried about Monsters Inc when I hear it has "a few cute moments" or "a couple of awfuly clever sight gags"

Re: Where have all the originals gone?

IMHO, its good that they're opening up new rides at the DLR in both DL and DCA, like the new SM, BLAB, FFF in 2002, and next year, the MI darkride, but I've had it with the movie and cartoon themes, like the new I ride or SV featuring characters from FN. What was wrong with the old SV? Whatever happened to the days of BTM, or HM, IASWAA, JC, or POTC for crying out loud? W.W.W.D.?

NOTE TO READERS: YellowMan has been known to joke around from time to time. Please don't take some posts by him to their full, literal meaning. Doing so will most likely end in one of the following: making a fool of YellowMan, making a fool of yourself, making a fool of Ronald Reagan, drymouth, or in rare cases, death. Thank you and enjoy your stay.
