A little confused about Rope Drops

I've read in some places about the Rope Drops that occur at DLR. However, I've never actually witnessed one and wasn't really sure how they worked. Do they let you into Main Street earlier than the listed opening time? What would be a good time to go for a rope drop in DL and/or DCA? Would they be doing these in the last week of June?

Just some curious questions about the Rope Drop I read about, but have never seen.

This past week at DCA we entered at around 9:45 am, but the park wasn't supposed to open until 10. They just block off any entrances to the lands (minus Condor Flats) and this music comes on and an announcement is made. It's nothing too special.

As mentioned they only let guests in early when the park opens later than 8am. There is a rope at the end of Main Street blocking entrance into Central Plaza (the "hub"). My little secret is to go through the Main Street shops (they are all connected... this is also what we do during parades) and wait at the Refreshment corner which has a door that leads out to the Plaza Pavillion patio. You obviously don't want to step out onto it until they drop the rope but there usually aren't too many people (except maybe me and my brother) waiting there for the countdown.
