If someone wants to avoid crowds, are there any great places just outside the park to camp out and see the fireworks?

I've heard that the roof of the parking structure offers a good view. I haven't seen it personally, but you can defiantly see the launching platforms from there. However, you probably won't get a good view of Tink or the castle pyro.
Last summer I saw Imagine while walking on the I5 overpass from Taco Bell to the HoJo. It was a cool viewpoint!

I heard to see it up on parking structure is very good all you need to do is just pop the soundtrack so you have sound. that you would hear if you were in the park or maybe they can add speaker on top of structure that play what we would we hear if you were in the actual park watching the fireworks

the Harbor Blvd freeway overpass... or the northbound Harbor freeway exit at the light... you probably can't park a car there, but i bet you can stand and watch from there
