2/28/2006 New Episode - Official Disneyland Resort Podcast

Take the magic with you with the newest episode of the Official Disneyland® Resort Podcast (http://www.disneyland.com/podcast).

In this month's show our host, Michael Geoghegan, takes listeners from swashbucklers to steam engines as we highlight two classic Disneyland attractions that are sure to highlight visits to "The Happiest Place on Earth" in the months and years ahead.

First, Michael joins Disney Imagineer Kathy Rogers for an interesting and informative behind-the-scenes peek at the upcoming and much anticipated enhancements to the quintessential Disneyland experience Pirates of the Caribbean. As they journey thru the timeless attraction Kathy reveals what's in store for this favorite Disneyland adventure while Michael shares some great archival audio from the attractions storied past, including the original 1967 grand opening radio commercial and comments from Walt Disney himself.

In our next segment Michael takes listeners to an exclusive, early morning event at Disneyland on January 15 where more than 100 cast members and Imagineers gathered to dedicate the new Ward Kimball steam engine on the Disneyland Railroad (the first new engine added in nearly 50 years), plus coverage of the re-dedication of the Lilly Belle, Disneyland's very own VIP railroad parlor car. Interviews include chats with John Kimball (son of Disney Legend Ward Kimball), Disney railroad experts Michael Broggie and Steven DeGaetano, and Michael Campbell, president of the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society.

So climb aboard this podcast to learn more about Disney seafarers and live steamers from the folks behind the magic.
    Enjoy!

It's kinda funny they did the interview on the attraction. For those of you that haven't listened to the podcast and would like the cliffsnotes verisons here's some quotes from it, they are... I didn't put them in spoiler tags because it's so long so BE WARNED... SPOILERS

    *SPOILER*
    Pirates changes

"digitize all the master audio tracks"
    "enhance the lighting"
"coming back in and bringing the scenes back up to it's original level in terms propping and show sets" (dusty food out, randy pirates in?!)
"and we're also adding some elements from the Pirates movie franchise. Our friends Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa."
"our intent is not to touch the spirit of the attraction but to strengthen it and make it more relevant today"
"in our movie franchise Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa have always live in this world of the POTC. So it's our goal just to bring them into this attraction as if they've always lived in this attraction"
"Technology and story, keeping it fresh for our guests"
"Goes down March 6, comes up in late June prior to the premiere"
"lighting and a brand new audio system... some movie themes--music movie themes from the movie. And along with some new dialogue for Barbossa and Jack"
"This is part of an ongoing process for Imagineearing. We've looked at Small World, Jungle Cruise, and Pirates is just one of those classics that we want to work on also"
"This has been in the works for over three years"
"as we come in here [the battle scene] this is one of those areas where you're gonna see some new technology in terms of the effects. The canon effects and also with the clouds and you're just gonna get a brand new sorta feeling when you come into this scene"
"our team is taking quite a bit of care in making sure we maintain this great classic"
"No, we're not [changing the sections like this one, the dunking scene, they're just gonna be updated, they won't be changed wholesale or anything like that] the intent is to bring Sparrow into the attraction. He's in it with all the other pirates just like you expect him to be and theres not a new scene that he's sorta inserted into some of the scenes here."
"It's all the details, from the chickens, the donkeys, the pirates... those are all part of the overall experience"
"for an attraction like Pirates because it's already an existing attraction, it's understanding WHO IS Captain Jack Sparrow and who is Barbossa and what is the most appropriate location for them to live in this world... for example Barbossa can be captain of the Wicked Whench, and he's looking for Jack Sparrow so he and the rest of his pirates are looking for Jack Sparrow before Jack can find the treasure that they are all looking for so we're setting up that new story and how will Jack fit into that world?"
"There are over 70 human pirate figures"
"We started on Piratse as a refresh over three years ago along with the 50th... as we were developing it, the POTC movie came out and it became relevant to the world"
"the redress concept existed before the movie came out"
"we were working on new technology, new effects and the movie came out and we were like whoa well where can Sparrow where would Barbossa be?"
"Now that there's a second and a third film coming out we're also working with the studio to find out if theres any other characters that may be relevant to come into the attraction. In fact one of the new characters, davey jones, will be part of the new attraction"
"Actually, I think [these guys at the end are gonna get the treasure up the hill.] You won't be seeing them after we come back up after our downtime."
    *SPOILER*

And what a weird coincidence the podcast mentions Lily and the flowerbeds which I made mention of earlier tonight!

The biggest shock to me is the introduction of the music from the movies. My first impression was they shouldn't touch the soundtrack at all.. But an addition of some of the synth music from the soundtrack might be a nice change. For example, I could see that music playing during the battle scene.
