I second that!! WDW's trees are practically perfect cones with stuff stuck to the sides. I never understood why they can not make them look more real, especially the one at Magic Kingdom. I have a little more faith in Disneyland that a fake tree will look much better. It's sad they are switching, but I knew it would happen sooner or later. They will probably be saving a lot of money doing this. No more paying for 2 trees, making one of them look perfect, then spraying TONS of fire retardent on it.

Well this is sad news...I love the smell of real trees.
I am sure Disney will use some kind of sent 'o' meter to repro the scent.

Hopefully they can replicate the smell better than the 'new car' sprays you can buy at auto stores.
They can just douse it with the chemical used in Soarin'. I'll miss the pine scene on Main Street too.

Seven years, eh? Odd little number. Methinks this is nothing to do with environment and everything to do with cost and cost of transporting it, putting it together with misc branches, spray painting it green with fire retardant, securing the riggings, etc. Plus, likely a huge fire liability. Also, didn't branches fall off last year or am I hallucinating? Sounds like a lot of costs and logistics in the name of saving a few greens and I'm not talkin trees!

To be just a bit cynical.

Very sad news indeed. A fake tree can never have the same look and of course wonderful scent as a real tree.

While I agree this is sad news for the resort, I hate to say it but I don't think the pine scent was ever real to begin with. I'm sure D'mom knows the answer for sure, but I always heard despite the tree being "real," additional pine scent was always pumped from the base of it.

^Hmm, never heard of that because I always seemed to notice the scent diminish over time to the point of not smelling at all by Christmas. Dmom? Any word on that?

I know it's a fire liability, but Disneyland handled the hotel fire well. And don't we pay big money for the things like the tree? Money grows on that tree, in a sense. I think you're hallucinating about the branches.

It just takes away from the beauty and magic of Disneyland I think. I mean, only Disneyland could decorate a tree that huge that beautifully! You go undr the bridge and see a huge Christmas tree and can't believe it's that big in the middle of a park!

^ Ironically, the hotel fire was in an artificial tree, so they(artificial trees) are not fireproof anyway, just more resistant than a live tree.

Is there any chance they are making this move out of sensitivity toward guests with allergies?

As for the environmental issue, real trees are much better on that front than fake ones. Christmas trees are typically grown on farms, and cut down for sale just as they are coming to the end of their superfast growth period. The constant turnover means that a Christmas tree farm takes CO2 out of the air much faster than an area of natural pine forest the same size.
