Went to DLR tonight. Parked in Pinnochio, got a pastry from La Brea, and watched the fireworks from the esplanade just for the heck of it. Brought a friend, who i'm working to convince into being my AP-buddy.
Overall, nice. Not sure I can make it a regular thing though.. I feel weird being at Disney (or a Disney park, if you prefer) and talking about my normal life "what time do you go in tomorrow?" and "traffic was bad this morning wasn't it?"
That's something about DLR that's always bothered me. The real world belongs firmly outside the parks. I curse like a sailor in real life but tell people to zip it in the parks.
Best parallel I can think of is "holy ground" or a church or something. Not that Disney is holy, but I think you get the point.

To be honest, I say curse as long as you're discreet about it and others don't hear you. You can then be free and not worry about offending the little @&%^#.
As for leaving the real world outside, you can figure something out. At WDW, since it is it's own world entirely, I think it's way easier to be lost in to parks. At DLR, you step a couple hundred feet outside the parks and you're back in the real world. Don't stress about outside world issues I suppose. Either that, or you'll end up getting used to riding the Matterhorn and discussing school.

KNRG, once you pass under the train tracks and enter main street, you get that same 'Check reality at the door' feeling. At least I do.

It is so worth it. Whenever i have a bad day at work or whatever, i just go to DLR with bf and i feel a whole lot better
sure there are lines once in a while. We usually go there to see what new merchandise they have or to just have a walk around the park, go on a couple rides. It's relaxing, especially on off days and rainy days when there aren't a lot of people there..come to think of it, i really miss rainy days..we are in dire need of some here in socal with all the fire pollution..but anywho, just do it
