Disney on a Dime is not your typical Disney guidebook. There will be no tips and hits on which attraction to hit up first, or what the weather will be like during your stay. Instead, this guide will provide you everything you ever wanted to know about saving money at Walt Disney World.
Written by Chris and Kristal Carlson, a couple from Northwest Arkansas who love to visit the “world” as much as any Disney fan. Unlike most families though, this couple has found the secrets to affording a trip at least once a year by skimping and saving where it counts most. They have complied all of these tips into one very easy to read book called Disney on A Dime.
The book starts by telling you exactly what you will and will not find located in the pages of this paperbound book. It also describes how the book will help you. If you are weary about purchasing, simply read these first few pages before deciding.
Before I continue with the review, I must preface by stating I am a frequent Disney visitor myself. I have been to Disneyworld several times and Disneyland more times than I can count in the past five years (probably around 100-200 times). I know most of the money saving secrets and read this book expecting to find most of them listed.
What I found was exactly that, most of the secrets and hints were already familiar to me. I was happy to see that everything I knew was put in the book. What I did not expect was to learn some new and interesting facts about cost saving at Walt Disney World. While they were few and far between, there were some great dining tips, budget hints, and hotel perks I did not know about.
The book in laid out into several chapters. The authors did a remarkable job at repeating or referencing tips that related to another area or topic. Those first time visitors or people not familiar with the Disney “system” will be able to easily distinguish which cost saving ideas will work for them.
Probably one of the most impressive sections of the book is the intensive coverage of on and off property hotels. One can compare prices and amenities all within the pages of this book. Although, I would not recommend it being your only reference, it is a great starting point and can help eliminate sites that are not within budget. I would have liked to have seen the deluxe hotels covered within this section as well. The authors did state that those going to Disney World on a budget would never stay at these hotels; I feel that honeymooners may want to enjoy part of their stay at on of these properties. A comparison of rooms and amenities would be nice, as well as possible ways to save money while staying at a Deluxe Resort.
The book also covers sample budgets within the back of the book. This is great for families looking for ideas on how to save money without taking the time to do all the research themselves. I liked that there was several ideas and flexibility within the plans. Many times, budget books will simply give you the cheapest way to do something. This book takes into account many of the options families have. For example, there is a sample budget for all meals in the hotel room, just breakfast in the hotel room, counter services restaurants, as well as sit down meals.
Overall, I thought that Disney on a Dime is a very well written, easy to read book that would be useful for more Disney World visitors. If you are a frequent guest who feels you know most of the tricks, skip this one. Those who have visited Disney World once or twice and are itching to get back, but feel you can not afford it, check this book out.
