Re: Return of the King
Honestly:
It was very fullfilling unlike a certain Matrix Trilogy and the Star Wars Trilogy (so far).
It was about 3 hours and 20 mins, but most of it went by real fast. The closing parts of the ending kinda dragged on but really Jackson was just following how the book ends. What makes the movie so damn long is because he stopped Two Towers with about 100 pages left. So MOST of that was put into ROTK, adding another 45 to an hour.
Overall, great movie, worth my $$$. That Special edition 4 hour and 20 min DVD will be insane though.

Re: Return of the King
I took off of work on Wed afternoon, nice benefit of owning your own office, and went to see it. It was fantastic.
It is a robust 3 hours and 20 minutes, and does not really start rolling until after the first hour (although there are very important elements being set in place during that first hour), but if you look at your watch and it is past that first hour...don't get up to take a bathroom break. The action goes nonstop for the next two hours, before slowing down over the last 20 minutes.
The movie does not follow the end of the books at all, so if you are a fan of the books, then be prepared. But some aspects that worked so well in the books would not have translated well to film, and I think the choices made worked well.
One last tip: Don't see it without having seen the other two first.

Re: Return of the King
I totally agree about Matrix and Star Wars Ep. 1 and 2. There's just no comparison. The King Has Returned! The battle scenes were incredible. Man, those elephants reminded me of AT-AT's, with Legolas taking on the roll of Luke. The ending? Perfect. I didn't think it was drawn out at all when you take it in the context of the whole trilogy. It was a long ending for one movie, but not as the finish to all three together.

All I know is that Peter Jackson's very, very, very, very, very, very 1st cut of ROTK came in around 4hrs 20mins. I bet we'll see some of that stuff again.

Re: Return of the King
Okay i haven't read the books, so from a film-goer only perspective, I loved it too. and I thought the ending was my favorite part. So nice to see the little small moments and human touches put into the epic story. And the battle at minas tirinth (or however the crap you spell it) was amazing. The whole thing was great. Big thumbs up.
