I voted for Cars, but I'm also the head of the "I Think John Lasseter Is Dreamy" fanclub, so my opinion doesn't really count.......

Over at Jim Hill, he's got an article about the "Fraidy Cat" which he claims has been shelved due to it not being "commercial enough". Don't know if that's true or not.

Seems a shame to see it go though – the images he has on his site look pretty different, and it seems like a concept that's a big departure from the often formulaic Disney fare. Looks like there was a lot of potential there.

Interesting article...I remember Fraidy Cat from past SIGGRAPH-like WDFA displays, but hadn't noticed it missing from the most recent one. Jim made it sound pretty cool...certainly sounded more interesting to me than Wilbur Robinson. But I hated Treasure Planet, it put me to sleep. So who knows.

I have never heard anything good about David Stainton, even outside of Mr. Hill's site, so I don't find the whole story too far-fetched.

Pretty much. Here's a review from Animated News. They actually say it's not too bad.

I was actually very interested in the Fraidy Cat movie. It sounded pretty cool. Too bad it has been shelved. Stupid Disney people and their need to market their characters in Happy Meals...

    Hitchcock-ian Happy Meals would RULE!

I really hope Hill is wrong on the reasoning behind this. You look at a movie like Nightmare Before Christmas (a stop animation Christmas movie featuring skeleton men and singing corpse boys) and I don't think it would appeal to a wide audience either - on paper anyway.

But I think people are hungry for something a little different. I also think it's the off-beat movies that develop the strongest, most loyal fan base (assuming the quality is there, of course).

I thought Disney was getting out of their rut with American Dog. Hopefully they don't decide to start playing it safe again (already).
