Attn: David Lynch Fans!!! Inland Empire Clip

This clip of the upcoming Inland Empire shows just how digital video will look in cinematic form. Very cool!

Apparently he will not be using traditional film anymore to shoot his motion pictures. I love the look!

The movie is slated to be released later this year.

Also, Twin Peaks Season 2 DVD has been announced for a Nov. 21st release.

Actually reading a little more.... This is not a scene from Inland Empire, but more of a test shot using some of the actors from the film. At any rate, it shows how DV will look cinematically.

Digital cinema is alredy here. You see it all the time.

The most obvious examples are the last two STAR WARS movies, which were shot entirely with the CineAlta cameras -- 100% digital 24p. A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION was shot 100% with the CineAlta 950. Michael Mann's COLLATERAL with Tom Cruise used a combination of film cameras and a digital camera called the Viper FilmStream, another pro 24p camera, and his MIAMI VICE was shot entirely with the Viper. NBC's series CONVICTION and the upcoming SUPERMAN RETURNS were both shot entirely with the new Panavision Genesis camera, a new professional digital 24p camera designed to mimic the functionality of industry-standard Panaflex cameras.

Also, a huge number of television sitcoms already capture 100% digital, mostly with the CineAltas. Such shows include JOEY, REBA, and THE GEORGE LOPEZ SHOW. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA on the SciFi channel also shoots digitally (though its pilot was shot on film). There are probably two dozen more.

So, bottom line, the future is here. There is so much digital production going on that you have been experiencing it already and not known it. Lynch is playing catch-up ball.

For filming in DV it is an entirely new experience for Lynch. Here are a few of his quotes.

"For me, there's no way back to film. I'm done with it," he told Variety. "I love abstraction. Film is a beautiful medium, but it's very slow and you don't get a chance to try a lot of different things. With DV, you get those chances. And in post-production, if you can think it, you can do it."

The change in media has completely altered Lynch's way of working. He says that Laura Dern has responded especially well to the differed demands of digital, and he even embraces the "bad" look of video. "Some would say it looks bad. But it reminds me of early 35mm, that didn't have that tight grain. When you have a poor image, there's lots more room to dream."

Mort, do you have any idea what the movie is going to be about? I've been hearing about it for awhile but haven't heard any plot lines or release dates.

See that is the fun part... He created the plot as he was filming it! The final plot has been pretty tight lipped. But, the basic premise is about a woman in trouble in the Inland Empire of L.A.

Well whatever it's about, it's going to be weird.

Weird. Needs fir trees. And mist. And a young Sherilyn Fenn.
