But the movie is called Torn, and supposedly we're going to follow his character. Seems like a weak start, where we know nothing about his character from this movie.

    True, but:

The first one itself was a bit more 'Flynncentric' than Tron oriented. Besides, this one wasn't about Tron, but his 'legacy' IE all that he brought to Flynn in the first one. The concept of 'the grid' and interacting with programs as life forms there. I'm hoping for a 3rd with a lot more Tron in it, but the box office numbers aren't in my favor.

I'm sure they'll do a sequel. The amount of money they poured into this one was laying the foundation for future movies. They're invested. They'll make a sequel, I hope.

That's definitely the plan. Not just future movies either; from what I hear, they're planning for Tron to be their next Pirates-level franchise. Now it's all hinging on how well the film does in theaters.

From what I've read, it did okay. The numbers were actually pretty good, it's just that Disney's projections, as always, were ridiculous. No, it didn't do Avatar or Pirates numbers (*groan* Avatar, bleh), but it also isn't directed by Super Famous James Cameron or Super Talented Gore Verbinski, but instead First-Time Feature-Film Director Joseph Kosinski. If Disney is disappointed in Tron: Legacy's performance, they have no one to blame but themselves for banking on an "unknown." (Though personally, I've got nothing but love for Kosinski. I can't wait to go see Legacy at least a third time.)

Personally I don't think Disney should be disappointed. It's a much better film than Prince of Persia was, and wasn't that another potential franchise? Plus I'd bet whether people love the movie or not, Tron merchandise will do well. That has to count for something.

If anything, I'd say Disney should have pushed harder to let people know that Tron is only rated PG. I feel like a lot of people are judging the movie as if it's rated PG-13, which is unfair. And I'm not sure how many 10 year old boys are actually going to the theatre - twice I've gone and I'm not sure I've seen any kids either time - and wasn't the 10 year old boy demographic what Disney was aiming for? (Besides the people seeing it for nostalgia reasons...)

I just hope it does well enough for at least one sequel. It deserves it just as much as any other franchise around right now.

Oh, and for the record, I've heard conflicting reports of $44 mill or $66 mill for its opening weekend box office, but I think the lower number is correct. I've read that it more than tripled the numbers of Speed Racer, when it opened the same weekend a few years ago, and I think it cost about the same to make, so I think it's doing well, if not stellar. Here's hoping for a sequel.

Finally saw the movie today. I thought the visuals were spectacular (I especially liked the Wizard of Oz moment when the movie went from 2D to 3D once Sam got into the grid). The music was also great, especially how it seamlessly blended orchestral and electronic elements. As for the story, I was actually bored. I literally yawned a few times near the middle of the movie....I didn't mean for it to happen, I was just that disinterested! Overall I thought it was a decent movie, but nothing I would pay to go see again, even despite how effective it was in 3D.

Not sure if this is completely true, but I read that so much went into this film (the financial investment) because they were laying the groundwork for more movies.

I thought this was a good movie. A little thin in the story line, yes, but I prefer that to lame plot lines. The movie probably could have benefited from 5 more "Tron" related minutes. Visually perfect for my tastes - loved he 'feel' of it.

    Cool Tron review

I saw Tron in IMAX 3D a few days ago.
It was ok. I was expecting it to be the Star Wars for kids that are 8-12 and my 12 year old cousin loved it. So for him I think it was good and hit the spot. But for me I was not wowed like I was when I saw Avatar in 3D.

For me I was expecting something better than Avatar with visual effects and Tron was good but not great. The story was predictable and seemed like it has some odd cuts in it. Just when something big happened they cut to a totally different scene like nothing took place at all.

With all the marketing I was wanting more.

Great comparison to Star Wars. I thought this blew the prequels out of the water. It still could've been better, but it was much better than some of the crappy re-makes turned FX movies out there.

TRON Legacy is alright. The story was missing the Disney magic.
