In general I find the Oscars pretentious and nominating more cause movies rather than great stories. The Oscars really are less about the fans and more about letting people get a little glimpse into their exclusive club.
But I still watch

^Well, IMO the people who say the Oscars should nominate more "mainstream" films just for the sake of it are just like the Academy who ignores mainstream films, because the films that they do recognize are most of the time stellar works in some way or another, be it acting, plot, or any other factor, or mixes. I respect the Academy for not nominating popcorn films just to get raitings, because, let's face it, rather or not the mainstream likes the film, the goal of the Academy has always been about honoring the overall best film, and while they have made mistakes (Not nominating Almost Famous in 2000, nominating Micheal Clayton in 2007) overall I'd say they've done a pretty good job from a filmmakers standpoint of nominating the best works of the year. Then again, I look at films in a much greater detail then most people do.

Have not seen Dark Knight, but I saw 2/3rds of the film at a personal screening. Not bad, but I just was not interested at all. It did not grab me, I did not care for many characters (I liked Ben's mother), but something just didn't work for me. It never felt like it began. It just starts and I'm waiting for something to sink in with me, but never. I don't know, not that great for me.

I really wish Doubt would have gotten the Best Picture nom instead of The Reader.
Did anyone else see that movie? I thought it was really intense.
I did go into the movie with low expectations and no knowledge of the movie though. :P
Also, I loved Benjamin Button, except for Brad Pitt. He was a bore. But I think it does deserve most of its nominations, except for the Brad Pitt one. :P"Street Car coming back!"

^Yeah, Doubt was excellent. I think it kind of suffered from "Wrestler" syndrome though when it came to Oscars. Meryl Streep was so excellent that she over-shadows every other aspect of the film, even the great Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Not an easy feat)
