by doing sequels, you can create longer lasting character recognition and capture a broader portion of the market with your characters. had mickey never made it out of Steamboat Willie (or Plane Crazy), he would not have been the huge icon he is today. though i doubt pixar is trying to make mike or sully the next iconic cartoon, by generating the character recognition, you can boost sales in a fairly low risk environment. people are more likely to watch a sequel than a new movie because of the familiarity with the characters and the story (assuming the first one was good) and thus will spend their movie going dollars first on movies that they 'know' will be good, especially as movie going dollars have tightened per family over the last three years due to the economy.

^ IMO, while this type of thinking works for other studios, Pixar has a MASSIVE built-in fanbase of people that will go see any and all Pixar movies because their reputation as a studio is that good. I agree with others that it appears Pixar is just milking itself instead of focusing on more original material.
That said, notice the release date for this movie: it's in the late-Fall! All Pixar movies prior have been released during the summer. 2012 was supposed to be the year Pixar adopted a two-movie-a-year schedule instead of one, so it looks like that year we'll be getting Newt (Summer) and Monster's, Inc. 2 (Fall). Can't complain too much with one original picture for that year.

It's actually been stated that we are getting "Brave" that summer (formerly titled The Bear and the Bow) and then Monsters 2 in the fall. Which is why I'm concerned about where Newt fits into all of this.

Newt might have hit story troubles and gotten pushed back a bit. And judging the by the synopsis given when Cook announced it, I'm guessing that's the case.
Jaleel White does not approve.
