Records Set As Thousands Run Through Disneyland Resort, City of Anaheim and Angel Stadium of Anaheim for "The Happiest Race on Earth"

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Sept. 5, 2010) — Paul Ngeny, 31, of Auburn, Calif., led a record field of more than 14,000 registered runners Sunday at the fifth annual Disneyland Half Marathon, crossing the finish line first with a time of 1:07:24, beating the fastest Disneyland Half Marathon time by 41 seconds.

“The course was very nice and comfortable,” Ngeny said. “I liked running through the parks and all the music. I could keep on going for a hundred miles.”

Finishing just behind Ngeny was Eric Marenburg, 27, of San Diego, Calif., with a time of 1:12:10. Kevin Broady, 48, of Brea, Calif., finished third with a time of 1:12:43.

Rachel Booth, 29, of Mountain View, Calif., claimed the title of 2010 women’s champion with a time of 1:15:19, beating the fastest women’s finisher time in the history of the Disneyland Half Marathon by 00:04:04. Booth, who performed better than she expected, finished just 18 seconds off of an Olympic trial qualifier time.

"It was great. Magical," Booth said. "It's in Disneyland and it's just a happy day. Always enjoyable. Everyone was so loud and cheering."

The women’s second-place finisher was Theresa Lowry, 36, of San Diego, Calif., with a time of 1:19:05. Susan Loken, 47, of Phoenix, AZ, took third place with a time of 1:19:13.

Other notable finishers of the 2010 Disneyland Half Marathon are Jon Megeff, 47, of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., who won the men’s Master’s Division (age 40+) with a time of 1:16:57, Merryt Jackman, 41, of San Diego, Calif., who topped the women’s Master’s Division (1:28:16) and Scott Parson, 51 of San Jose, Calif.,(00:56:45), and Sandi Rush, 49, of Oceanside, Calif., (1:17:06), winners of the men’s and women’s wheelchair divisions.

The fifth anniversary of “The Happiest Race on Earth” welcomed its largest registration field as more than 14,000 runners from every U.S. state and 16 countries made the magical 13.1 mile journey. The course traveled through the two Disneyland Resort theme parks – Disneyland and Disney California Adventure - and along Anaheim streets, passing landmarks such as the Honda Center and running on the field of Angel Stadium of Anaheim, while Disney characters and festive entertainment inspired runners along the way.

Participants who completed the half marathon received a special edition medal featuring Sleeping Beauty Castle circled by a vibrant number “5” and running Mickey Mouse. Nearly 570 Legacy runners – those who completed all five Disneyland Half Marathons – received a special medal lanyard.

The third annual Coast to Coast Race Challenge medal was presented to approximately 2,350 runners who completed the Walt Disney World Marathon or Half Marathon or Disney’s Princess Half Marathon this year at Walt Disney World Resort and then also completed Sunday’s Disneyland Half Marathon. The Coast to Coast medal showcases the iconic “Partners Statue” of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse.

The 2011 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend is scheduled for Sept. 2-4, 2011. Registration for next year’s Disneyland Half Marathon is scheduled to open Jan. 3, 2011.

During the 2010 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, Disney announced that Jeff Galloway, one of America’s foremost marathon trainers, will be the official training consultant to Disney’s series of endurance events, which has been rebranded runDisney. The new runDisney brand also includes a new website, rundisney.com, which will provide runners with a wealth of running-related content, from Galloway training videos to endurance tips to complete runDisney event information. Additionally, newly-launched facebook.com/rundisney will provide opportunities for the endurance community to connect and interact with runDisney.

The runDisney series is a program of half marathon and marathon events that provide runners unique opportunities to run through Disney theme parks. Race participants also get to earn Disney-themed medals, experience legendary Disney entertainment and guest service, and ultimately celebrate their accomplishments with a Disney vacation. Before the sun rose this morning, the 5th Annual Disneyland Half Marathon had commenced. By the time many guests visiting Disneyland today were rolling out of bed, more than 12,000 people had completed the 13.1 mile journey that lead runners through both Disneyland Resort parks, Angel's Stadium, and the surrounding Anaheim area!

Top Honors went to Paul Ngeny of Auburn, CA for Men's and Rachel Booth of Mountain View, CA for Women's. Scott Parson and Sandi Rush came in first for Wheelchair. More than 14,000 people registered and an impressive 12,358 finished the race!

Jeff Galloway, the recently announced Official Consult for runDisney, was the master of ceremonies giving encouragement to the racers at the starting line. He was accompanied by the race ambassadors, Mickey and Minnie.

We finally tried the Tomorrowland Terrace new menu. All orders are now cooked to order meaning your food is not being prepared until you order.

This would be great if it didn't take us literally 15 minutes (I timed it) to get our food after we ordered it. Isn't counter service supposed to be FAST?




The food IS really tasty though. The grilled chicken sandwich above is a worthy successor to the crispy chicken sandwich (thanks in part to the guacamole) that it replaced. The Mahi Mahi wrap shown here is also quite delicious.

The Downtown Disney stage is back to basics with no movie to promote. I imagine TRON will be taking over soon to promote ElectTRONica.




There is a fun setup near the ESPN Zone where you can get a free photo print-out, this is to promote the upcoming No Ordinary Family show which debuts later this month on ABC.




We went to the pilot screening at the Disneyland Hotel, the show was ok. It was pretty much The Incredibles meets ABC Family Drama.

Halloween has creeped into World of Disney.




Noticed some of the medallions on the 50th bricks are having lost/stolen medallions replaced with non-metal ones.

Not sure if this is just a temporary fix until more medallions are made available or if this is a permanent fix. I bet they can't wait for the 10 year mark on these maintenance nightmares.

Main Street shops are already swinging into Halloween mode too. This year's new Halloween hat, Zombie Mickey. I really like this one!

Too bad the castle doesn't get dressed like this for Halloween! I always thought it would be cool to have thorny vines crawl up from the moat onto the castle like in that one film... you know Sleeping Beauty? Maybe have a Maleficent castle show each night too. It is Aurora's castle, after all.

The Village Haus also closes on Monday for its shot at a kitchen remodel. Cafe Orleans was first this year, then Tomorrowland Terrace. This should help update the restaurant to more modern equipment. Expect the menu here to be similar to the Tomorrowland Terrace's new menu.




Baby goats were out getting acclimated to being around the hustle and bustle of the crowds.




Hadn't been inside of Miss Chris' Cabin in a long time, last time I was there it was a sorry mess but they've gone in and layered in some more detail and it looks really great!




Flowers, lanterns, and other little bric-a-brac have been added around the house to really make it feel like someone actually lives here.

A tiny sign informs guests that Tower of Terror and Hyperion are only accessible through a bugs land. Luckily, the Cast Member here was rather vocal letting guests now.

Also, who decided it would be smarter to use the HYPERION logo instead of the ALADDIN MUSICAL SPECTACULAR logo on that sign?




It's like something out of the Wizard of Oz, ain't it purdy?

Weekend Events Expect to Bring in More Than
19,000 Athletes And Record Field for Half Marathon Sept. 5

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Aug. 23, 2010) — A record field of more than 14,000 registered participants will take to the streets of Disneyland Resort and the city of Anaheim for the fifth anniversary of “The Happiest Race on Earth” — the Disneyland Half Marathon. In addition to the 13.1-mile half marathon, the weekend features activities for the entire family, including a Health & Fitness Expo, Disneyland Fabulous 5K presented by the Los Angeles Times, and Kids' Races.

In true Disney fashion, the fifth anniversary of the race weekend will be celebrated in several ways. Athletes who complete the half marathon will be rewarded with a commemorative edition finisher medal featuring Sleeping Beauty Castle circled by a vibrant number “5” and running Mickey Mouse. Nearly 570 “Legacy Runners” — those who will be running in their fifth Disneyland half marathon — will also receive special recognition throughout the race weekend.

Participants from 16 countries and all 50 U.S. states are set to compete in weekend races. More than 14,000 are registered for the Half Marathon Sept. 5, and 5,000 are registered in the Family 5K and Kids' Races, Sept. 4. Participants and the general public can also visit the Disneyland Health and Fitness Expo at the Disneyland Hotel. The expo features the latest in official Disneyland Half Marathon merchandise and more than 90 vendors of fitness apparel, footwear, sunglasses, high tech gadgets and nutritional products.


The Disneyland Half Marathon features a course unlike any other in the world. Passing through the two Disneyland Resort theme parks — Disneyland and Disney California Adventure — and the streets of Anaheim, participants will experience a race full of inspiration that only Disney can provide, including live entertainers and Disney characters at the start line and along the route. The road race has become popular for its flat loop course and mild climate — ideal for personal best times. Hosted by the Disneyland Resort and the City of Anaheim, it reached registration capacity — for the fifth consecutive year - in late spring.

“We are so proud to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Disneyland Half Marathon,” said Disneyland Resort President George A. Kalogridis. “This unique event has become a tradition of fun and memories for thousands of athletes and their families. We share the success of this event with the city of Anaheim. Since 2006, we have jointly brought more than 80,000 participants from around the world to the Anaheim Resort Area.”

Throughout the race, runners will pass Disneyland icons such as Sleeping Beauty Castle and the Matterhorn, Anaheim landmarks such as the Anaheim Convention Center and Honda Center and will see themselves on the jumbo screen running on the field inside Angel Stadium of Anaheim, before finally crossing the finish line next to the Disneyland Hotel.



An estimated 2,350 runners are eligible to earn a special medal for the third annual Disney’s Coast to Coast Challenge Race. To be eligible, runners must have completed the Walt Disney World Marathon or Half Marathon or Disney’s Princess Half Marathon this year at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla., in addition to completing the 2010 Disneyland Half Marathon. The Coast to Coast medal showcases the iconic statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse (known as the Partners Statue).

The next Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend will take place Sept. 2–4, 2011. Registration is scheduled to open Jan. 3, 2011, for the 2011 Disneyland Half Marathon.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Aug. 19, 2010) – Disney villains will invade Disneyland park along with Mickey Mouse and his friends in Halloween costume when Halloween Time returns to Disneyland Resort Sept. 17 through Oct. 31. Highlights of the Disneyland Halloween season include the return of Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy – the thrillingly “haunted” version of the popular Tomorrowland attraction – and the longtime favorite Haunted Mansion Holiday, in which Halloween and Christmas collide for an attraction inspired by “Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Halloween Time offers families a chance to enjoy seasonal attractions and décor, as well as interact with beloved Disney characters decked out in whimsical Halloween costumes. Guests can also experience spooky fun with Disney’s more sinister characters, the Disney Villains. In addition, Mickey’s Halloween Party returns for 10 special nights in October.



Mickey’s Halloween Party is the new name for the exclusive, private-party celebration that lets adults and children alike dress up and trick-or-treat at the resort, this year in Disneyland park. This separate-ticket, nighttime event is scheduled for Tuesdays and Fridays in October (1, 5, 8, 12, 15, 19, 22, 26 and 29) plus Halloween night itself, Sunday, Oct. 31. Highlights include:
  • The “Halloween Screams” fireworks spectacular, hosted by “Master of Scare-omonies” Jack Skellington (presented only during Mickey’s Halloween Party this year)
  • More Treat Stops located throughout Disneyland
  • Most of the favorite Disneyland rides and attractions
  • A nightly “Mickey’s Costume Party” cavalcade
  • Character photo locations featuring Mickey and his Pals, princesses and other favorites
  • The opportunity to arrive three hours before the party starts to enjoy Disneyland

Tickets purchased in advance for Mickey’s Halloween Party are $49 most days, while tickets purchased on the event day are $54. For Oct. 31, all tickets to Mickey’s Halloween Party are $59. Favorite Disney characters, including Mickey himself, will be in attendance in their favorite costumes. It’s the ideal environment to have fun, eat special holiday treats, play interactive games, listen to “spirited” music and watch a nightly character cavalcade that celebrates the season.

While at Disneyland Resort for Halloween Time, guests can also see the new, nighttime water spectacular “World of Color,” running nightly at Disney California Adventure park.



For Halloween fun at Disneyland, guests will enjoy Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy in Tomorrowland. The experience begins as a typical Space Mountain adventure, but suddenly launches voyagers into a haunted section of the universe. Ghosts appear out of the starry darkness and swirling galaxies of Space Mountain, reaching out as if to grab guests as they speed through space. The exhilarating drops and curves of the journey are punctuated by piercing screams, creepy sound effects and haunting music. The Halloween transformation occurs outside the mountain as well, as frightening images, audio and lights illuminate the Space Mountain exterior.

Jack Skellington also returns to take over the Haunted Mansion and bring back Haunted Mansion Holiday to New Orleans Square in Disneyland. Transformed to a mix of Halloween spookiness and Christmas tradition, Haunted Mansion Holiday is inspired by the classic animated film “Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas.” Jack and his friends provide plenty of havoc and surprises as they celebrate the holidays in their unusual style. Jack’s return to the Haunted Mansion includes the traditional Halloween/Christmas gingerbread house in the Mansion Ballroom, with some special spooky surprises in this year’s design.



Halloween Time offers frightfully delightful fun for children and adults.
  • For spine-tingling fun, drop in at The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure park, where a “supernatural” event happened on Halloween evening, 1939, forever haunting the building.
  • Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland is transformed for the Pumpkin Festival, where more than 300 “non-identical” pumpkins will be on display in shop windows.
  • Visitors to Big Thunder Ranch in Frontierland will find ranch animals, pumpkin carvers, Halloween décor and activities for youngsters, all presided over by Sheriff Woody.

  • Rancho del Zocalo in Frontierland will honor Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead with traditional skeleton figures on display Sept. 19 through Nov. 2.

ANAHEIM, CALIF. August 18, 2010 – Disneyland Resort and Workers United Local 50, the Resort’s second largest labor union that represents food and beverage cast members who work in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks, are pleased to announce that they have reached a five-year collective bargaining agreement. The agreement was negotiated in just six days and was ratified by an overwhelming margin. This is the first time in this local’s history that a five-year contract has been agreed upon.

The Disneyland Resort and Workers United Local 50 delivered this joint statement today: “We are pleased that an agreement was reached and ratified before the current contract expired. Our mutual dedication to the bargaining process allowed us to quickly and efficiently reach a deal for our nearly 4,000 food and beverage cast members who work in the two parks. The contract will provide these cast members annual wage increases of 3 to 3.5 percent over the next five years.”

Over the past two years, Disneyland Resort has successfully negotiated nine agreements with 27 local unions representing nearly 13,000 of the approximately 15,500 cast members who belong to unions. All of these agreements include wage increases, sick pay and access to seven affordable and reliable health care plans offered through Disney’s Signature benefits package for full-time cast members.

We had the unfortuitious circumstance of being in line for Space Mountain when it 101'ed not once, not twice, but three times... all within about 5 minutes of each other! When that happens, the lights turn on in the attraction so I took the opportunity to snap some pictures of the area. So close to actually being ON the ride when it happened!

BURBANK, Calif. – August 11, 2010 – D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, is bringing more musical talent to its “E-Ticket: Music from the Disney Parks” concert, part D23’s Destination D: Disneyland ’55 event at the Disneyland Resort September 24 and 25. The announcement was first made through D23’s Disney Geek, a new show on the D23 Web site featuring the latest news from all around Disney.

Michael Urie (Ugly Betty), Tracie Thoms (Cold Case, Rent), and Barrett Foa (NCIS: Los Angeles) are joining a previously announced, all-star line up of performers, including Disney Legend Richard Sherman, Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty), Wilson Cruz (My So-Called Life), and John Tartaglia (Johnny and the Sprites).

The concert will be performed the evening of Friday, September 24, in the Grand Ballroom of the Disneyland Hotel.

Destination D: Disneyland ’55, an event designed exclusively for members of D23, will illuminate the fascinating history behind Disney’s flagship park, taking members on a mesmerizing journey through the design, creation and debut of the world’s first Disney theme park.

Destination D will also feature a special homage to the 55th anniversary of the Mickey Mouse Club, with original Mousketeers in attendance, including Sharon Baird, Doreen Tracey, Bobby Burgess, Karen Pendleton, Sherry Van Meter (née Alberoni), Tommy Cole, Cubby O’Brien and Mary Geoff (née Espinosa).

Throughout the two days of Destination D – which will be held September 24 and 25 – guests will also enjoy panels, presentations and guest speakers, including explorations of the development of Audio Animatronics; Disneyland’s unique place in pop culture; amazing never-completed Disney attractions; and an appearance by Disneyland President George Kalogridis.

Tickets to Destination D: Disneyland ’55 are $125 per person and are currently available to D23 Members at Disney.com/D23. All talent appearances are subject to scheduling and availability.
