The latest from Miramax is what seems to be a very simplistic film. Following in understated style of films like Running with Scissors and more recently the Oscar contender Juno, Smart People is a story of members of a damaged family trying to understand each other and their place in the world. The understated technique may seem a bit pretentious but what I feel was done so well in those films and in Smart People is that it reinforces the believability of the characters and their stories.
