Hi again guys-
Sorry its been a while between posts.....
This might be the last of my posts regarding my Charity Day Visit to
HK Disney
Today: Golden Mickeys
I have not seen this show anywhere else
(though I've been told, it is derived from a Disney Cruise Lines show)
Of all the attractions at HK Disney, this show has the highest per-
centage of Cantonese vs. English
Despite this, the show is simple enough to figure out what is going
on, and most of the songs are in English
Essentially, this show is a spoof on Awards shows, with the Golden
Mickey a kind of Academy Award or maybe an Emmy
This show has a very large live cast, that includes a Cantonese
speaking female glitzy announcer, plus quite a number of Disney
Characters and at least 15-20 other performers.
The staging is very clever & impressively done. One Musical number
after another is staged- all from famous Disney films of all kinds.
It is apparent that a lot of money was spent on costuming, sets,
staging, and the actual theater itself- Storyteller Theater
Nicer and larger than any Broadway theater, it is also set up with
a state-of-the-art sound system, and some large video displays
that enhance the show and add commentary
Projected on the huge screen behind the performers are enlarged
backrounds with art work from each Disney film as each musical
number is presented. This is a great effect and really enhances
the color, nuance, and impact of each set
I didn't time the show, but I would peg it at running about 30-35
minutes.
The reaction from a vast majority of the Chinese who were present
was one of pure joy. I suspect that many of these people had never
attended a live show done up Broadway style with so much
detail and style.
The positive reaction of the audience was particularly felt when
any traditional iconic Disney Characters appeared. Since many
Chinese had brought their young children, and I suspect thay have
watched Disney animated films for 2 decades, their reaction was
priceless. There was an electric excitement in the theater.
Golden Mickeys was a terrific final capper to our visit to HK Disney.
This show deserves a home in every Disneyland around the globe.

just to get an idea, is this theatre located on the far top end of Fantasyland?
hopefully i will be able to find someone that could send me a park map but with some pictures i have seen i always wondered what that large building in fantasylands border was.

Thanks
Thanks Ben, for the words of encouragement
Ismael: Yes, the Storyteller Theater is essentially north of Fantasyland at the very upper "eastern" part of the park
As you are probably aware, there is not much of a Fantasyland in terms of area

Thanks for the report! Sounds like a winner. I've heard great things about the DCL version.

Shelleymeister, I saw "Golden Mickeys" on wednesday and will say that while it does retain some elements from the Disney Cruise Line original version, it does have new stuff in it as well.. I'd say about 70% of the show is new to HKDL. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to seeing it again.

Oh...one more thing.. I forgot to mention I was hyperventilating at the sight of that muscular actor playing Tarzan and spinning on that rope (vine?) The audience approuved since they most enthusiastically applauded at this point in the show.

did you watch the parade or fireworks?
was wondering if you had a review of those two too.

The bad thing about Tarzan, though...at the end, when the characters are going through the audience, he's walking on all fours, ape-like, in "typical" Tarzan mode. Then, when he returns to the stage, he launches right into the graceful chorus line that all the characters have formed. It was very jarring and out of place, at least to me.
