Re: Large Earthquake to hit Southern California by september 2004
Disneyland opened its gates the morning of the Northridge quake back in '94, so I don't see that they would close the park in an earthquake unless they really had to.

Re: Large Earthquake to hit Southern California by september 2004
I thought that the Northridge quake was too far away from Disneyland to do any damage to it. Does anybody remember how much damage Disneyland took from the Northridge earthquake?.....

Re: Large Earthquake to hit Southern California by september 2004
well, of course they got it wrong. they're researchers from UCLA. If they had been from USC, they would have correctly predicted the exact second the earthquake would happen. none of this 6 month windows and still getting it wrong. If you're going to make a prediction this broad, you damn well better get it right.

Too far away?! A huge section of Anaheim Stadium was damaged by that quake! My dad even has video of the damage from inside the stadium.

Then it's a good thing I'm not a seismologist, because Southern California would be screwed......

Re: Large Earthquake to hit Southern California by september 2004
Yes, but the Northridge quake didn't knock down any buildings inside Disneyland. And as we were talking about whether the park would remain open if the castle or Matterhorn was knocked over, the Northridge quake isn't a very good example of what would happen if one of these was destroyed in a quake.

Re: Large Earthquake to hit Southern California by september 2004
didn't they just rope off the area when the tree fell over in frontierland? didn't they just rope off fantasyland when there was a gas leak on opening day? didn't they just rope off the area when the playhouse disney sign caught on fire? something tells me they would rope off the area if a building fell over. it would make more sense to me to close the park if someone dies on a ride, but they just rope off the area.

Re: Large Earthquake to hit Southern California by september 2004
But those things are not nearly of the same scale as an entire building collapsing. I don't know, an entire building collapsing (especially the size of the castle or the Matterhorn) seems a lot bigger to me than a tree falling over, a gas leak, or a minor fire. Not to mention the fact that an earthquake large enough to cause this kind of damage would not be centralized on these buildings alone, meaning that most likely damage would be caused to other buildings in the area (even if they didn't collapse yet). Personally, if an earthquake hit causing a Disneyland building to fall over, I think it would be quite foolish to simply rope off that area and continue normal operation everywhere else. The only safe thing to do would be to close the park until the entire park could be inspected before people are sent into buildings and rides that could potentially be damaged. Like I said already, if the quake was big enough to knock down a building or two in Disneyland, just because the rest are standing doesn't mean they're safe.

I know this is morbid but wouldn't it be a sight to see if the castle actually collapsed?!Joey AKA "dlfreak"
