A call came in to the El Cajon police department about 12:45 pm that there was a shooting at Granite Hills High School. The shots came during 5th period. At least two people have been confirmed wounded. One suspect in custody. Grossmont School District Superintendent Granger Ward says no one has been seriously hurt.

Witnesses say about nine shots were heard outside the school. There's a police perimeter around the school now. Police are making their way through the school doing a complete sweep of the classrooms. The school was locked down immediately after the shooting.

The students have been evacuated to Montgomery Middle School near Kennedy Park. Parents are being asked to come to pick up their children. Authorities are asking parents not to take their children home until they have checked with them. Parents will be required to show identification. Two wounded have been taken to Sharp Hospital. Both were alert and one had handicuffs on that was supposedly the suspect. One 16 year old male student was sprayed with tiny pellets with wounds to his face, arms, and upper body. The student is in serious condition. The wounds are not life threatening.

There are eight other people that have been taken to local hospitals. Two are teenage girls that hyperventilated, one is a 51 year old father with chest pains, and five others with pellet wounds to UCSD and Mercy Hospitals.

El Cajon police officers have been on-campus all week and one of those officers was at the school as the shooting occurred. The officer confronted the shooting suspect, had a running, short gun battle with him and was able to arrest him. The Hispanic suspect has been wounded in the face and buttocks. He has been taken into emergency surgery at Sharp Hospital and he is in serious condition. The suspect is 18 years old. Witnesses say he graduated from the high school last year.

The suspect reportedly had two guns. One a hand gun and a "long gun". One witness said the suspect went into a sniper position and reloaded once firing about nine shots.

The shooting comes less then three weeks after the Santana High School shooting were two students were killed and 13 were injured. Granite Hills High School is about four miles from Santana High.

Many parents of Granite Hills High School students bought their children cell phones after the Santana High shooting. Thursday they said they were thankful because when the shooting happened their children immediately called them to say they were fine.

Granite Hills High School will be closed Friday.
