I always order it medium, because that way, they'll likely not make it too well done or rare.

OK I wasn't going to look at this thread just because of the name but I just had to ..... and I am glad it's not what I thought it was...LOL

Thats exactly how I order it as well and for the exact same reason.
I think restaurants should have a conversion chart for what you get vice what you ask for. Like if the kitchen consistantly gives Rare for Medium or Medium for Well done. Its kinda like a Forrest Gump moment when ordering - Life is like a bunch of steaks, you never what you're gonna get.."An Investment in knowledge always pays the best interest." - Benjamin Franklin.
Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence - Robert Frost

Not quite medium but not quite medium rare.

I like it medium rare.
Which reminds me of a story:
One time, I went out to eat at this restaurant, and as it happens, I was seated next to this gypsy-looking lady. I ordered my food, and as I waited, I was fascinated, as she drew out a deck of tarot cards, and began telling fortunes to the people who surrounded her table.
Well, I am not one for fortune telling, but I noticed that as she told people's fortunes, whenever the person was about to receive bad news, she would get this cryptic grin on her face, and began the sentence with the phrase: "I am so happy to be able to tell you this...." because it gave the person an opportunity to do something to circumvent the bad fortune they were about to encounter.
But it really creeped me out. And a couple of times, in between reading other people's fortunes, I noticed that she continued to turn over cards... but occasionally, while looking my way.
Now I was really freaked out, because she did this three or four times. I dont know, maybe she was trying to get me to respond and invite her to tell my fortune, but as I said, I wanted no part of it.
Finally, this woman gets up from her table, and, without asking, sits down at my table! I was really feeling my space invaded! Then, to make matters worse, she leaned toward me, and started to say "I am so happy..."
Well, I freaked, and without thinking, my hand was flying across the table, and I actually punched this crone in the mouth to shut her up.
Because my mother always told me to strike a happy medium.....
Which is rare
If it is well done.

Yea well I heard the story of a gypsy who was a little person. Business in the fortune-telling business wasn't going well so he robbed a bank to have some quick cash. He was lucky and escaped. The next day the headlines read "Little Medium at Large"

I usually go for medium rare, in ordering, only because if you order rare you can get anything from medium to braised for 10 seconds.
if I make it myself im closer to the rare than the medium...
