death for Saddam is logical. When your actions murdered 100 thousand plus, your death as punishment doesn't seem unrealistic.
What's interesting is that you see other punishments as logical, but the death penalty as illogical because it doesn't solve much. What is the logic of punishment? I'd argue that alot of punishment is illogical if it is based on accomplishing something.
Is the punishment for rehabilitation (the reason for a ticket for speeding is so you are motivated never to speed again) or is the punishment the consequence of previous action (you broke the law by speeding and this is the result).
Personally, I see punishment as the consequence of actions and so the DP is in some cases is an fair punishment."Have you been on Autopia before....I tell you. You don't drive it, it drives you."- My Grandfather

Partly the reason and being at war with people that have sworn our destruction? Sounds right to me.
No, we didn't pick another Asian country. We only picked Germany, who, at the time, had zero direct impact on the U.S. as they were busy conquering the rest of Europe.Yes, we resisted getting involved in WWII because we waited until it directly affected the US. And then we attacked Japan, the country that ACTUALLY bombed us. We didn't just pick some other Asian country we had issues with and wage war against them.
WWII already is seen as just. And we're a little too close to this war to be making a historical judgement, don't you think?Yes, more died on D-Day, but 100 years from now, our entry into WWII will still be seen as just. I can't believe this war will.
As it has been since time began. And of course, the big problem with your last line is that it is a lot easier to utter it when neither you nor I is "fighting them over in the sand". It is the kids of people our age that have been.
Until, of course, there is some kind of terrorist act to get Saddam out and restore his power. He's executed, he's a martyr and will most likely be forgotten in most people's minds (like Qadafi - if that's how you spell it). He lives like a common criminal, he is still VERY active in peoples minds. And to put my 2 cents in on the hanging, I too was against it. I am against capital punishment, but not against punishment in general. I think to strip him of his power and lock him up like a common criminal would have been a far worse punishment for someone like Saddam. So for those that wanted him to truly suffer, I think living the last 20 years of his life as a prisoner would have been worse.

An interesting thing about those who hung after Nuremburg. They sort of made a mistake, they say, and the people who hung did not die quickly by having their necks snapped.
They slowly choked to death in agony, some taking as much as half an hour to die.You may contact me via jonvn@nadelberg.com.
