Disney/ABC TV Group Cuts 5% of Workforce

Disney/ABC TV Group Cuts 5% of Workforce

    http://www.ktla.com/landing/?blockID=199967&feedID=171

"The Walt Disney Co.'s television division has announced it is reducing its workforce by 5 percent as a result of the slumping economy.

The Disney/ABC Television Group, which is based in Burbank, is laying off 200 employees and will leave another 200 positions unfilled, according to company officials.

The cuts will be spread across all of Disney's television operations, including ABC, ABC News and the cable networks Disney Channel, ABC Family and SoapNet."

    ABC Family and SoapNet.
Soap Operas, supposedly, are about to be headed the way of the dinosaur. They're relatively expensive to produce per episode, while the stay-at-home crowd has shown just as much interest in Reality TV drama as scripted hour-long soaps.

I hope things turn around soon, you know times are really horrible when Disney starts cutting jobs.

When people think of Soaps they think of Days of our Lives etc,but really any show that has a continuing daily/weekly storyline is a soap. So I dont think soaps are dying,in fact with shows like The Oc,Lost,Prision Break etc,I think soaps are just doing just fine.

From what I hear, some soaps may be ending. But the ABC soaps are doing well, so I don't think those will be cancelled.

To bad Disney Channel can't be cancelled. But it makes to much money.

I wasn't described that such information. What you listed are what I was told are television series under the drama category. Certain characteristics categorize a soap opera, such as the level of emotion, plot twists, or even when they are aired, usually in the daytime time frame. It is equal to the difference between an action and family show.

A soap opera is 1) a drama, typically performed as a serial on daytime television or radio, characterized by stock characters and situations, sentimentality, and melodrama, or 2) a series of experiences characterized by dramatic displays of emotion.

Soap operas originated as 15-minute segments on radio in the 1930's. Because they were sponsored by soap manufacturers, particularly Procter & Gamble, were coined the name Soaps, later "soap operas." So it is also more a long daytime tradition that can be dated back to an origin after the creation of the daily or weekly radio show, which lead to television shows and series.

You're correct. Those are all hour-long dramas, some (The OC) with more soap opera qualities than others.

If anyone cares/watches it, Guiding Light is in danger of being cancelled. My grandma's happy about that!

I've always thought soaps were defined by daytime first-run episodes. Also that they are run Monday thru Friday, where as a prime time show is mostly run just once a week.
