    Disney Buys Land in MD

Hotel-resort planned on 11-acres of land:
The Disney site overlooks the National Harbor complex and the Potomac and faces north toward the District. Visitors can see the Washington Monument in the distance.

Looks like DVC is expanding! Not a dream spot but considering the rough start and a down economy they probably got in super cheap.

I'm addicted to Disneyland. Disneyland hobbies are expensive. If I become a bum people are going to say "Don't give him money, he's just gonna use it on Disneyland."

There is no metro station available for the National Harbor. Good luck with that.

I've been sitting on this one for over a year under threat of death if I let it out. Glad they finally announced it.

The hotel will be gorgeous with some amazing views - apparently this National Harbor area is quite nice and an LED show has been programmed into the trees and buildings on the main drag...which of course, the Disney resort will overlook.

Ok, as a life long resident.. let me tell you the local dirt.

No Metro? Who cares.. it's a resort, not a residence. Besides, it's close enough to the major tourist areas and airport to be easily available via shuttle.

Nice area? Not really. PG county is the worst in the area, and that corner of the city is one of the least desirable.

The entire project has been cut out of a wooded slope that faces the river. The river views are ok, but nothing glamorous. You basically look at the Arlington/Alexandria side.. not even DC.

It's basically an island of 'clean/new' in the middle of old, poor, and empty of anything interesting that is seperated by interstates and crap from anything interesting.

If anyone has any notion of like what the National Mall is... that is not this place

Thanks for the local perspective. I haven't seen the property myself, only secondhand reports.

As a local, how viable do you think this project is for Disney? Would it be a convenient place for DC tourists to stay?

I think the whole property is a Billboard for the Economic Bubble - built with the hope of 'if we build it, they will come..' so lets get lots of debt and build it.

It's certainly not a looker area surrounding the place (its all tree buffered right now). I think it's backbone right now is it's a new large convention space close enough to DC to be thought of as Washington still. But no one will be strolling to downtown on foot or public transit.

I don't know what type of Hotel they are looking to build.. a destination resort or what. Having never traveled to DC to visit it (since I'm so close).. I'm not sure what type of accommodations people seek out when visiting here for pleasure.
