TDS: New Coaster Name "Raging Spirits"

According to various sources, the name of the new rollercoaster attraction at Tokyo DisneySea is "Raging Spirits". It is the first 360-degree looping rollercoaster at Tokyo Disney Resort and costs about 8 billion yen (US$67.8 million). "Raging Spirits" is located in "Lost River Delta" next to the Indiana Jones' attraction and scheduled to open in autumn 2004.

The first roller-coaster adventure at Tokyo DisneySea will be full of curves, climbs, drops and, for the first time at the Tokyo Disney Resort, a 360-degree loop. Raging Spirits will be located in the Lost River Delta, the jungle-themed "port of call" already home to Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull.

For help in designing the attraction, Imagineers turned to a Disney animated feature. "We used The Emperor's New Groove for inspiration - not necessarily the story, but some of the visual styling and iconography from the film," says Joe Lanzisero, the Imagineering vice president who leads the Tokyo Disney Resort design team.

Raging Spirits will subject riders to an array of "in-your-face" special effects, including clouds of steam, jets of water, and flashes of fire.

A group of explorers were wandering around the jungle when one day they stumbled upon a 5,000 year old site, one with idols, a large temple and two altars, one of fire, one of water. However these explorers were not archeologists, and during their excavation they made a few mistakes. Their biggest mistake came when they were reconstructing the altar of water. They installed the last piece of the water god's head backwards so it faced the fire go, a big no-no. The result? Cauldrons erupting with fire; water spewing out of idols and a thrilling new ride for Tokyo-DisneySea. Opening in fall 2005.

Concept artwork found in an official Disney magazine of the Raging Spirits looks very similar to the Indiana Jones: Temple of Peril at Disneyland Paris. Also according to the magazine, they will construct a statue with its head facing backwards. This was supposed to be 'accidental' which will then lead to the statue to 'spit out' fire effects. The entire ride will be outdoors with some portions of it coming into the themed building.

It sounds terrific, but I shudder every time Paris's Indy coaster is mentioned - as it's a very poor coaster IMO, frontwards or backwards. I hope the track layout for Raging Spirits is much better.

Does anybody else think that $68,000,000 is way to much money for such a ride? The actual ride will most likely cost between $10,000,000 and $15,000,000. There is no way that this much money is being spent on the rest of the attraction. $20,000,000 sounds almost too much...

Tokyo likes giving Imagineers everything they need! Though it makes you wonder if they are not pocketing a few million here and there. Gas is expensive now ya know?
