Re: Water Parks
Yes, I use the term rip off. I feel that is the appropriate term when Disney builds a copy of a ride just to save money on designing a new concept, especially when they cheap out on the best effect of the ride, the fifth dimension.
Obviously, people would have other reasons to come out here other than TOT. If there ARE people flocking to see a rip off, I am curious about their motives. However, I doubt anyone here would fly 3000 miles just for one attraction.
I can confidently say that DCA's TOT will not be as good as MGM's, because the only part that really interested me in that ride is not in DCA's. Sure, I will ride it and say it's the second best DCA ride(next to Soarin'), but I'm not going to overplay it.
I like going to WDW for the original WDW rides, not the copies. I do like them, though, because it's fun to compare them, and see how Disney either improved them(Splash) or made them lousy(POTC). If they keep ripping off more stuff for DL, I will definitely go to WDW less, because the weather alone in Orlando makes it a hellish experience(no exaggerations intended) that really makes me want to stick to SoCal's DL.
Oh, and go to Typhoon Lagoon. It's a nice park.

Re: Water Parks
I agree with you Disneyman, I don't think it will be as good as the Disney MGM version, but I'm still going to ride before I make that statement. I do know DCA's version will have something not in the Disney MGM version, but alas I doubt it will make up for what DCA's version will be missing. Yet I still have a hard time seeing you call it a rip off attraction, it's probably not going to be as elaborate as DIsney MGM"s but clones not quite as good as the original is nothing new at Disney (cough cough Pirates cough cough)
My real problem with the clone idea, is that it's abandoing the idea that DCA is a unique experiance that you won't find at WDW, it's to simply apppeases the locals and gives them more to do. It's great for the locals, but weak on the very strategy they intended when they expanded Disneyland. The idea was to make it a destination resort, but we know that plan failed. DLR will remain a local's destination even after TOT opens.
I have the same problem with Epcot cloning Soarin, but WDW does not have the problem of being a locals resort, so although I agree in principal, in logistics it won't affect attendance except to increase it. DCA's clone on the other hand will increase traffic in Hollywood, but not drawing in any reason for a travelor to choose DLR over WDW, it remains to be seen if it will increase overall attendance.
I really wish DCA would get back to the idea of why they built it in the first place, but that ain't going to happen this decade, so in the meantime TOT will be a huge improvement and bring life back to Hollywood. Perhaps it won't be as good as the orignal (and perhaps it will, we'll have to wait and see for sure) but regardless I'd hardly call it a rip off attraction. It will probably be a bit less then it's predecesor, but that hardly means it will be a rip off. It's going to serve its intended purpose fine!Last edited by DLMAGICDARREN; 02-24-2004 at 08:47 PM.

And also, Darren has come to DLR just to see something new. Like FFF or HMH.

Re: Water Parks
I felt the same, but CM's that have ridden it have said otherwise...so I don't know anymore. I'll see in April. Disney Magazine also says that each shaft will be a different experience, whatever that means.

Re: Water Parks
I agree. The 5th dimension was wild the first time, but on repeated rides, you become aware of the mechanics of it. I'm really looking forward to having the show scenes and drops all in one shaft. There will be no warning, but more anticipation that it could happen at any moment. Like waiting to be launched on The Maliboomer.

Re: Water Parks
So you're saying that you would rather not have the rolling rock at the end of Indy? The first time I rode it, I was excited, but then I realized the mechanics of it and was not shocked. I still like the effect, and think it's something that gives the ride a great ending. The difference between that and the 5th dimension, though, is that it's just the finale of the ride, not a critical effect of the ride.
Do you know what would make it more exciting? Have no rooms at all and just have it be pitch black, and you'd never know when it'll go because you'll have no reference point. That would make the ride suck, but at least it would be "unpredictable."
I for one like to know when crap is going to happen, because I want to know when to brace myself. Screamin' has been so much better since the added the countdown, because I don't break my neck on the launch because I didn't know exactly when to keep my neck as stiff as possible a few inches away from the headrest. Space is the same thing. I like that even though it's dark, you can tell what will come next, because the curves are all basically the same, wide left or right turns. In WDW's, I find myself no knowing when it will do something, so I just get banged up when it turns and I have no idea what side of the rocket to lean to so I don't bang my arms on everything.
Unpredictability is nice to a reasonable extent, but in the case of Space in WDW, they went a little too far. I hope they don't do the same with TOT in DCA.
Oh, water parks? I love the lazy river in the Typhoon Lagoon. I also like the wave pool. It's really well themed.City Hall Complaint Count: 201

Re: Water Parks
Then the critical effect of the ride has changed. Who knows which will be better. I am optimistic over the change from what I have heard, and now that Tokyo will be using it as well.

Re: Water Parks
Well, I have ridden it, and I was right. It isn't as good. I can usually tell from descriptions from people, anyway.

There used to another water park at Disney World. It was called River Country. We went there about 20 years ago with our children. Not sure how long it's been gone.
