The 89th Annual Academy Awards have come and gone and Disney has once again earned itself some worthy acclaim this year. The house that Walt built continues to be a Hollywood heavy hitter in the entertainment business earning a total of FOUR Academy Awards.
The shine on ZOOTOPIA remains bright bringing home Oscar gold for the House of Mouse, edging out sister film MOANA. Animation was well represented by Disney with another win for Animated Short by Disney-Pixar’s “Piper.” Continuing to lead the visual film-making charge, Disney also won the best Visual Effects award this year for the groundbreaking work in THE JUNGLE BOOK. ESPN also brought Disney some bling with the Best Documentary Oscar win for “OJ: MADE IN AMERICA.”
Disney missed out on a win for ROGUE ONE (Sound Mixing) and also for for MOANA (Best Original Song: “How Far I’ll Go”). Still, the princess flick did get some screen time during the presentation with a live performance of the nominated song by Auli’i Cravalho and Lin-Manuel Miranda (who sang an introduction). The performance was introduced by fellow cast member Dwayne Johnson who indulged a quick line from “You’re Welcome” before the actual performance got under way.
