INCREDIBLES 2 was a solid follow-up to its 14-year-old predecessor and now that it’s come home, you’ll have even more ways to enjoy the famous family of supers. We received our courtesy screening copy from Disney and found a wealth of visuals to take in.

The most impressive aspect of the release — and really the only reason anyone even buys DVDs for anymore — is the BONUS MATERIALS! If you’re a mega fan of the franchise, you’ll have plenty to dive into with the featurettes, clips, and videos. There’s literally hours of extra content here. Of course, what you get might vary depending on how you buy the film but on the Multi-Screen Edition that we received, we got access to the following…

Behind the Scenes

My favorite assortment of bonus materials are basically this entire section…

• Strong Coffee: A Lesson in Animation with Brad Bird is one of the more meaty features going full end to end across the production of the film and rewinds back to his early inspirations by Disney Animator Milt Kahl. It might very well be my favorite of the lot. The feature earns its name from the fact that director Brad Bird is strongly passionate and very demanding creator calling for long hours and the subsequent large amounts of strong coffee needed to keep the operation moving. It’s mentioned in the piece that he’s like a connection to Disney’s nine old men and that’s a sort of invigorating and inspiring thing to know that this type of creativity is in place at the studio that the lamp built.
• Ralph Eggleston: Production Designer asks the Pixar strong arm what exactly a Production Designer does. The 2-minute piece goes into what his role entails at Pixar. It’s short but so great; it further enforces what seems to be Pixar’s Post-Lassetter strategy to emphasize the TEAM behind the Pixar power-house instead of a single omni-present figure-head.
• Super Stuff talks to a bunch of animators and crew from the film to go over all of the literally “super” things involved in bringing to life INCREDIBLES 2. From buildings and vehicles to costumes and props and all done in a beautiful mid-century modern or how Pixar is calling it: retro futurism. The concept art, sketches, and interviews here are all movie-making magic and is such a treat to take in.
• SuperBaby is completely not my speed featuring Frankie and Paige from Disney Channel’s Bizaardvark.  The hybrid documentary/hip hop music video hybrid is all about Jack-Jack. It’s… uh… interesting.
• 10 Deleted Scenes With Introductions are included: Suburban Escape,  Kari Revisited, Return of the Supers, Chewed Out, Late Audition, Slow Day, Frozone and Honey, Restaurant Robbery, Fashion Show and Security Breakdown.

Extras

There’s A LOT of randomness going on here; some really great and some rally random.

• SuperScene Breakdowns are really great deep dives more into the Pixar process with in depth breakdowns of two scenes (Elastigirl and The Raccoon Fight). What’s immediately notable here is the female powerhouse behind the scenes at Pixar for the Elastigirl scene. Where formerly it seems like we might have had John Lassetter previously piping in here we get to hear from some of the great and varied talent at Pixar in both of these featurettes. For the Raccoon Fight we hear from the dudes but in great measure here as we hear from all five instead of just a single figure head.
• Paths to Pixar: Everyday Heroes  looks into family dynamics which come so strongly into focus on this project. The nearly 12 minute featurette gets into some really great nitty-gritty behind the scenes looks at the layers and attention to detail that go into bringing these projects to life.
• The Coolest Guy in Show Business doesn’t really need any description does it? Four Words: Sam Mother Effin Jackson! The three minute short goes into a brief background of Sam’s career, his upbringing, what what drew him to this Pixar franchise more than 15 years ago.
• Hero Theme Songs are a fun pickup from the credits. We instantly fell in love with these songs in the theatre after the film ended and now we get three fun videos done in ’60s style featuring the heroes with suitably cheesy graphics. All three are included here: Frozone (the best!!!), Elastigirl, and Mr. Incredible.
• Toy Commercials are three fun extras that I hadn’t seen before and they’re more retro magical goodness with toy commercials featuring the Incredibles (and Frozone) as toys available in the 1960s. Except for the fact that the spots use toys that were actually available this year, these are a pretty fun addition to take in.
• Character Explorations are done in little 2-3 minute videos that feature voice talent and crew talking about the iconic characters from the film. Each is a little bit of fluff but offer fun concept art and talent interviews. We get videos about Mr. Icredible, Elastigirl, The Parr Kids, Frozone, Edna Mode, Winston Deavor, Evelyn Deavor, and all of the Wannabes.
• Audio Commentary is included here and while we haven’t had the chance yet to take in the film in this way, it’s exciting to be able to get insights on the project from animators Alan Barillaro (supervising animator), Tony Fucile (supervising animator, story artist and character designer), Dave Mullins (supervising animator) and Bret Parker (animation second unit and crowds supervisor).

SHORTS

• AUNTIE EDNA is a new short issued specifically for the home release and goes more into the amazing dynamic between Edna and Jack-Jack on that fateful night when she babysat the baby. If there was one moment in the movie that warranted further exploration it’s this dynamic duo. I’m ready for Incredibles 3 to feature just them, to be frank.
• BAO was a beautiful short that opened ahead of the movie in theaters and its inclusion here means you can sob uncontrollably on demand!
• MAKING BAO is a 6-minute behind-the scenes look with director Domee Shi discussing how her rich cultural heritage, unique relationship with her mom, and her love of food all informed the making of the food-fantasy short. There’s some great visuals here including beautiful concept art and storyboards plus some adorable footage of her mom making bao in her special way.

EASTER EGGS

Are you still reading? There’s FIVE additional bonus extras to explore including a random fun bit with Brad Bird telling his hilarious story of his own encounter with raccoons; another with Bird talking about an early lesson from his mentor Disney Animator Milt Kahl; animation “outtakes” with Evelyn Devour; Puppet Animator Interview Outtakes (what on earth??); and SuperBaby:60 offering even more of the Bizaardvark madness that you just couldn’t get enough of the first time.

Three digital features that you won’t find on the disc include the following:

• Incredibles 2 Stars Reveal Their Must-Have Pixar Films is a junket piece when cast and creators were doing press for the film and all were asked to pick their faves. It’s not a terribly interesting piece but that’s why you’re reading our review so you know what to skip. 😉
• Incredibles 2 Sneak Peek: Security Breakdown – Deleted Scene never made it to animation. We see storyboard clips with actual voice recordings and some audio. It’s featured with an introduction by director Brad Bird.
• Meet the Supers is another piece that seems to not be created specifically for the release. It features a look at the new superheroes created for the film and it’s led by voice of VOYD, Sophia Bush.

Global “Incredibles 2” Trailers and TV Spots and other promotional videos round out the offerings.
