PSF_V3_BEAUTY_SHOTS_Static_FNLPIXAR SHORT FILMS COLLECTION: Volume 3 has been unleashed and it provides yet more ways to dive into the beautiful expansive universe of Pixar.

As with the previous two releases with Volume 1 and Volume 2, you might wonder what exactly is the purpose of bringing home this release if you already own the home-release of all the Pixar films and the answer is really simple: because you don’t have EVERYTHING in your existing collection.

In Volume 3, we get an expected assortment of previously released short films — eleven in total — everything from fan favorites like BAO and PIPER to other notable shorts like LAVA and (finally) THE BLUE UMBRELLA and there’s also some of the shorts that were released in other ways such as then-exclusive additions to the home-releases of films such as BRAVE’s LEGEND of MOR’DU or INSIDE OUT’s RILEY’S FIRST DATE.

But that still doesn’t answer the question of what new things you could expect to find. That’s where the bonus materials come in and for PIXAR SHORT FILMS COLLECTION: Volume 3 there’s a few:

Bonus Features:

  • Two Mini-Movies are provided here that you certainly won’t find on your existing home-release issues: Marine Life Interviews & Miss Fritter’s Racing Skoool. The former almost feels like the bonus “extra” material at the end of the Toy Story movies but oddly enough for some reason the piece just doesn’t come together into an ultimately funny or interesting way, it’s literally just “lost” interviews with the various cast of FINDING DORY. The latter is a fun little short done in the style of an informercial featuring Miss Fritter from CARS 3 and the other stars from the film giving their testimonials.
  • Filmmaker Intros are a nice personalized touch for each film giving us a look at the respective filmmakers and their inspirations and tribulations for these stories.
  • Filmmaker Commentary tracks for each short feature the respective filmmakers is a great addition that gives insights into the compact storytelling that goes into creating these award-winning pieces. It’s always fascinating to hear the anecdotes and tidbits that go into these “short” stories. Oddly the commentary and intros are presented together in a single video combining ALL shorts together for a pretty horribly useless 1 hour and 28 minute long single movie.  Where as the discs which lets you pick and chose what to watch, you’re in for a long journey on digital. Very, very, very poor decision to run the features this way.
  • Making Bao is a bit more in depth featuring director Domee Shi and the process by which she paid tribute to her mother and her culture to bring to life this beautiful emotional story. It’s the same one we already have on the INCREDIBLES 2 release which does rob this issue of a bit of its uniqueness.
  • Caricature: A Horrible Way of Saying ‘I Love You’ is one of those extras that will just make you hate your job. There might be an Employee of the Month at your company or a reserved parking spot but at Pixar there’s CARICATURES. One of the biggest signs of respect and admiration at the house of Lamp is to be drawn into two dimensional comedic form. Pixar is such a massive place and as we’ve seen with bonus features since John Lasseter’s departure from the company, they really seem to be playing up the collaborative TEAM that really makes up the success of this studio.
