What We Tasted

Anaheim Chile Relleno Bites with Salsa Verde

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

Anaheim Chile Relleno Bites with Salsa Verde ($6.75) – By far our favorite of the festival so far. A most unexpectedly delicious dish that couples the distinct flavor of Anaheim chiles with a delicious salsa that pairs with the crunch exterior and creamy topping. An absolute must try, especially if you like Chile Rellenos.

Petit Impossible Burger with Guac and Pepper Jack Cheese

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞⚪

Petit Impossible Burger with Guac and Pepper Jack Cheese ($8) – If you’ve never tried the IMPOSSIBLE brand meatless product you should absolutely let this offering be your first entry. Cooked perfectly and topped with a tangy guacamole and flavorful Pepper Jack cheese, it’s a great dish that we honesty feel you’d be hard-pressed to know is meatless without knowing ahead of time.

MORE INFO: What exactly is an IMPOSSIBLE meatless patty?

Cauliflower Ceviche with Chile Corn Crumble and Tortilla Strips

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

Cauliflower Ceviche with Chile Corn Crumble and Tortilla Strips ($6.25) – Wow is this one a surprise! This completely vegan offering is a most delightful surprise of freshness and flavor. There’s no fish or even fish substitute in this dish and yet as you pair the confetti of flavors with the fresh salty corn chips you somehow have the essence and flavor of eating a beuatiful fresh ceviche. The dish is NOT fish by any means yet somehow this all just works and it’s fantastic.

20190301_152605

Grilled Asparagus Chicken Caesar Salad

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞⚪

Grilled Asparagus Chicken Caesar Salad ($7) – A delightful twist on a classic dish. Rich, tangy, and creamy!

20190301_154338

Fried Artichokes with Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Lemon Aioli

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

Fried Artichokes with Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Lemon Aioli ($7) – Eating this freshly prepared is key. We happened to have a pretty fresh batch and it was really delicious. The crispy batter with the caramelized artichoke underneath is irresistable and the tangy aioli is a perfect pairing. I wish there were a little more greens to help balance this out but it’s a really great choice.

20190301_154347

Artichoke Toast with California Olive Tapenade

RATING: 🌞🌞⚪⚪⚪

Artichoke Toast with California Olive Tapenade ($6.50) – I love olives and i love me a tapenade but this artichoke toast is not exactly mind-blowing. It’s absolutely delicious for what it is but there’s nothing particular inventive about this one making it hard to declare it a must-try.

20190301_123931 20190301_124050

Kombucha Mojito Cocktail with Fresh Mint

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞⚪

Kombucha Mojito Cocktail with fresh mint ($13.50) – Not very strong. Refreshing but not a must-try.

20190301_152658

Verlasso Sustainable Salmon Peruvian Poke with Cucumber-Lime Salad and Aji Verde Salsa

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞⚪

Verlasso Sustainable Salmon Peruvian Poke with Cucumber-Lime Salad and Aji Verde Salsa ($7.50) – A great take on a poke bowl with a zing. The Aji Verde Salsa provides a nice tang that couples well with the raw salmon.

20190301_162405

Deconstructed Teriyaki Chicken Musubi with Pineapple Relish

RATING: 🌞🌞⚪⚪⚪

Deconstructed Teriyaki Chicken Musubi with Pineapple Relish ($7.25) – This dish is DENSE! While it was not a favorite it certainly delivers in the realm of portions. So many of the dishes in the festival are rather light but the rice, chicken, and sauce here create a hearty sample size dish. The teriyaki chicken was not stellar but the pineapple relish provided a nice sweet balance and the sticky rice was actually really good.

20190301_123734

Spiced Roasted Chicken on Pita with Avocado Hummus and Garlic Sauce

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞⚪⚪

Spiced Roasted Chicken on Pita with Avocado Hummus and Garlic Sauce ($7.50) – I wish something like this was offered on the regular menu of Paradise Garden Grill. The pita was a little hard which provides a more tostada-like experience. The garlic sauce is ON POINT. The dish won’t disappoint.

Salt and beer vinegar Parmesan chicken wings

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞⚪

Salt and beer vinegar Parmesan chicken wings ($8) – A hold-over from the same dish we sampled last year when we said: Cooked perfectly. Very moist. It seemed like these were crispy at one point but perhaps suffoated in its own moisture creating for wings that were not soggy but not crispy. Under the right conditions these could be stellar, the wings we had were not. However, portions here were pretty decent.

Black Garlic Soy Braised Pork Belly Banh Mi

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

BLT Chicharrón Duro with Ranch Crema ($7) – Another hold-over which we tried last year and said: Fantastic! Pork Belly usually hits the top of our list and this does the same for us this year. It’s a SOLID choice that is full of flavor.

20190308_122425

BLT Chicharrón Duro with Ranch Crema

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

BLT Chicharrón Duro with Ranch Crema ($7) – Surprisingly delightful. The chicharrón is light and crispy, not greasy at all serving as a base for what is essentially a tostada with a salty bacon and perfectly complimenting sauce that’s all balanced out with the fresh lettuce and tomatoes.

20190308_122525

Asian-style Beef Barbacoa Taco with Pickled Ginger

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞⚪⚪

Asian-style Beef Barbacoa Taco with Pickled Ginger ($8) – The ginger provides a fresh twist to a classic Mexican flavor profile. Was pleasantly surprised by the flavor here but it felt like it needed a little in terms of toppings on the taco. Nice portion of meat, though.

20190308_132958

Shrimp Boil Tacos with Andouille Sausage and Fresh Corn

RATING: 🌞🌞⚪⚪⚪

Shrimp Boil Tacos with Andouille Sausage and Fresh Corn ($7.50) – A nice spicy bit of shrimp and corn that would have been a little more delightful if all the ingredients hadn’t been hacked to death into indistinguishable pieces. The texture profile suffered from the chop.

20190308_125027

Fiscalini White Cheddar Lager Soup served in a Mini Boudin Sourdough Bread Bowl

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

Fiscalini White Cheddar Lager Soup served in a Mini Boudin Sourdough Bread Bowl ($6.75) – Amazing! Definitely one of the top dishes of the festival. Imagine a cheesy garlic bread in soup form. It’s definitely a must-try.

20190308_125914

Strawberry and Coconut Rice “Frushi” with Sweet Oikos Yogurt Wasabi Sauce

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞⚪⚪

Strawberry and Coconut Rice “Frushi” with Sweet Oikos Yogurt Wasabi Sauce ($5.50) – Really good, really refreshing. Quite satisfying and yet… maybe not worth the effort; especially if you’re using Sip & Savor.

20190308_131804

Blue Diamond Almond Cake with Butter Streusel, Apricot Compote, and Brown Sugar Crème Fraîche

RATING: 🌞🌞⚪⚪⚪

Blue Diamond Almond Cake with Butter Streusel, Apricot Compote, and Brown Sugar Crème Fraîche ($5) – Hardly a bad dish, it tastes good but it’s not very memorable.

20190308_125116

Citrus-brined Pork Roast with Tangy Barbecue Sauce and Lemon Pepper Slaw

RATING: 🌞🌞🌞⚪⚪

Citrus-brined Pork Roast with Tangy Barbecue Sauce and Lemon Pepper Slaw ($8) – An interesting option. It’s a hearty portion of pork. The citrus flavor really comes through giving the dish perhaps a slightly sweeter flavor than expected. We felt like there was not enough slaw to balance it out. Imagine that, the dish had TOO MUCH meat!
