FIRST TASTE: Knott’s Boysenberry Festival 2019 offers a berry eclectic assortment of flavors!
Knott’s Boysenberry Festival is BACK bringing a berry good time filled with limited-time food and entertainment offerings making it one of the most colorful times of the year to visit the Buena Park favorite.
This year’s newly-expanded festival features over 75 unique boysenberry-inspired creations crafted by the Knott’s culinary team and we’re ready to share with you a small sampling of what we got to taste already! In full disclosure, we were invited to sample these menu items free of charge in exchange for our honest feedback.
What We Tasted
Boysenberry Pie Yogurtland Froyo
If you’re a fan of froyo and a fan of boysenberry pie AND you’re near a Yogurtland anywhere in the US — yes, nationally — then you’re in luck because there’s a fantastic new option to try. The creamy texture complimented by that trademark sweet-tart flavor made this a favorite of everyone in our group. Find it during the festival or at your nearest Yogurtland!
Boysenberry Pot Roast
Boysenberry Pot Roast served over rich and creamy boysenberry mashed potatoes. If you’re worried about venturing into the berry filled world of boysenberry let this SOLID dish be your entry-point. Succulent pot roast served with a delightfully purple mound of creamy carbs. Definitely a stand-out.
Boysenberry Chili in a fresh-baked boysenberry sourdough bread bowl. Even the bread has a boysenberry tinge to it. This is a great dish, the boysenberry is extremely subtle here which is why it doesn’t rate higher for us. It’s good chili, though.
Boysenberry Jerk Chicken Wings
Boysenberry Jerk Chicken Wings. If you’re wondering where the flavor or boysenberry starts to come into play with the menu items this is one dish where you can start to really get the unique tart-sweet notes of the berry in this tangy barbecue sauce covered dish.
Boysenberry Grilled BBQ Chicken Skewers (top)
Boysenberry Grilled BBQ Chicken Skewers served with a zesty boysenberry aioli dipping sauce. These were absolutely amazing, we over heard some of the staff saying that the chicken is braised in a ground bacon giving it a salty richness that, when paired with the boysenberry sauce, makes an absolutely irresistible and undeniably memorable must-try dish!
Boysenberry Dry Rubbed Flank Steak (bottom)
Boysenberry Dry Rubbed Flank Steak topped with boysenberry cream cheese. Served as a skewer and served with potatoes we were not as impressed with this meat on a stick as much as we were with the chicken. If you’re in a mood for beef, stick with the pot roast.
Boysenberry Glazed Salmon
Boysenberry Glazed Salmon served on mixed greens and topped with a boysenberry vinaigrette. What’s not to love here? Delicious salmon over a delightful bed of greens and a sweet boysenberry vinaigrette. Super delicious and not as heavy as some of the other dishes.
Boysenberry Habanero Baked Mac and Cheese
Boysenberry Habanero Baked Mac and Cheese. A delicious venture into the world of cheesy goodness. The habanero seemed to shine through here stronger than the boysenberry but you can hardly be disappointed with a cheesy crusted dish of mac and cheese.
Boysenberry Elote, a grilled corn on the cob smothered in fresh boysenberry butter, mayo and topped off with cotija cheese and a boysenberry crunch. We don’t remember having the boysenberry crunch on our elote last year and it made all the difference this year. It gives the elote an even more intense purple color and the whole thing just tastes great!
Boysenberry Jambalaya prepared with chicken, boysenberry sausage and bell peppers served with white rice. I’ve never been to N’awlins so I can’t attest to the authenticity here but I can attest to great zesty flavors here from all the ingredients slow-cooked together for a hearty dish that’s packed with flavor and a little bit of heat.
Boysenberry Pulled Pork Tostada
Boysenberry Pulled Pork Tostada topped with creamy coleslaw and boysenberry drizzle. We weren’t as impressed with this dish as some of the others in our party. Not bad by any means, just not particularly memorable.
Boysenberry-Lemon Hummus served with pita bread. A similar version of this was served last year and we found it to be bland and unremarkable. This year, it’s given a citrus kick with a stronger presence of lemon but we still can’t say that we’d recommend this dish. Despite the beauty of the purple carrots that come with it, it’s an easy skip for us.
Grilled Boysenberry Sausage
Grilled Boysenberry Sausage on a freshly baked roll. A favorite last year and a favorite this year. An absolutely delicious salty boysenberry sausage that you can compliment yourself with boysenberry ketchup, boysenberry relish, and boysenberry mustard. Definitely a must-try for the festival.
Boysenberry Boba Tea
Boysenberry boba tea which consists of boysenberry milk tea and chewy berry-soaked tapioca balls served over ice. Super sweet but not much of a taste of tea here if that’s what you’re looking for. But very good otherwise.
Boysenberry Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Crisps
Boysenberry Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Crisps served with creamy boysenberry ice cream. We didn’t get to try this but there was a sample of it on display without the ice cream. Looks like a classic favorite that’s sure to delight.
