#SDCC: 2019 Her Universe Fashion Show continues to prove ‘geek couture’ can be really powerful!
The Her Universe Fashion Show took San Diego’s Manchester Grand Hyatt by storm once again this year kicking off San Diego Comic-Con with a powerful bang! Now in it’s 6th year, the show celebrated the theme of THE POWER OF FASHION. Attendees were treated to a dazzling array of power expressed through artful fashion.
In total, 24 designers were tasked to participate bringing to life designs representing far reaches of pop cultural fandom including Jurassic Park, Haunted Mansion, Steven Universe, and Marvel! Two winners were chosen this year: Judge’s Pick was Adria Renee with her Isla Nublar Jurassic Park outfit and Audience Pick was Sarah Hambly for her Bodak Green Loki dress. The grand prize? The opportunity to collaborate with Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein (voice of Ahsoka Tano, Star Wars) on a Her Universe fashion collection for Hot Topic for WONDER WOMAN!
Judges this year included Ed LaBay (VP/GMM, Hot Topic), Liz Muñoz (CEO, Torrid), Lisa Baldzicki (VP Parks Merchandise & Product Development, Disney Parks), Meghan Camarena (@Strawburry17, Producer, Host, Actress), Merit Leighton (Voice of Frosta, on She-Ra and the Princesses of Power), Michaela Dietz(Actress, Voice of Amethyst, Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe), Kristi Siedow Thompson (Designer, 2018 Audience Winner), Cynthia Kirkland (Designer, 2018 Judge’s Winner) and Jane Burson (Designer, 2018 Singer Sewing Winner).
Sponsors this year included Hot Topic and DreamWorks Animation’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power plus Box Lunch, Cartoon Network, The Pop Insider and Espionage Cosmetics
Fabulous Ashley Eckstein served once again as hostess for the evening and she rocked several amazing looks designed by Andrew MacLaine (2013 winner) who has designed several looks for Ashley over the years. She also rocked a fabulous Haunted Mansion jumpsuit by previous Her Universe Fashion show designer, Leetal Platt!
Friend and actress Tiffany Smith joined Ashley during the show as a correspondent during the show.
In celebration of 80 years of Batman and his recent induction as the first inductee in the Comic-Con Museum hall of fame, Ashley had a dazzling simple black gown with the Batman emblem.
Ashley Eckstein is participating in mental health awareness for children with the #OnOurSleeves campaign and showcased unisex designs — proceeds from which fully support the cause.
