Guillermo del Toro Disneyland tweet a tease to resurgence of HAUNTED MANSION reboot?

Guillermo del Toro “randomly” tweeted out two photos today “of uncertain appeal” from a pre-opening stroll through Disneyland’s HAUNTED MANSION. Obviously, this caused a mini stir of speculation as to whether or not his previously announced HAUNTED MANSION project might be back “on track.”

The two pictures show him at his “favorite place in the world.” He can be seen in the photos during his tour of the attraction both in front of it and posing with the attraction’s creepy pipe organ from the iconic ballroom scene.

Despite being announced at Comic-Con in 2010, the film has yet to see the light of day yet or even signs of pre-production. Yet at the same time it has also not yet been officially cancelled with last year’s rumblings of Ryan Gosling in talks for a role in the film.

Interestingly, fans who saw his most recent CRIMSON PEAK might have caught what was either a small tribute or yet another clever tease to the HAUNTED MANSION project with the inclusion of the wallpaper from the Disneyland attraction’s lobby that was also used in the film’s own large foreboding house.

That “Haunted Mansion” lily wallpaper is publicly available and quite creepy so it could be a coincidence that the patterned wallpaper with its eerie lily flowers was chosen coincidentally. But that’s not much fun is it? The paper was also used for the CRIMSON PEAK maze at Universal Studios last year. Check out the 59 second mark of this video for a look of the paper at the Universal creation this past fall.

Commenting in 2010, Del Toro’s passion and excitement for the project and its history is evident:

“Dark imagery is an integral part of the Walt Disney legacy. After all, Disney himself was the father of some really chilling moments and characters – think Chernabog from Fantasia or Maleficent as the Dragon or the Evil Queen in Snow White. I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of my own adaptation of the original theme park attraction Walt envisioned and that remains- for me- the most desirable piece of real estate in the whole world!”

  1. Would definitely be interesting to see where Guillermo Del Toro could take the franchise. It definitely wouldn’t be anything like the Eddie Murphy venture, that much is certain.

  2. No question I would LOVE to see GDT’s take on the Haunted Mansion. I am sure he would make a great tribute to the Mansion, and make Walt proud, while bringing his own amazing creativity to the film. I say, bring it on! ??
