ROGUE ONE is the breath-taking first-ever standalone Star Wars feature film not just from Disney but from LucasFilm and it did not fail to deliver. The heart-stopping (and heart-crushing) story is a thrilling roller coaster of emotions that ends with the dramatic moments before Darth Vader confronts Princess Leia in Episode IV.

And now, the adventure comes home in all the glorious formats including Digital, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, and On-Demand. For the pricier formats, you’ll find yourself with a host of goodies to peruse.

On second viewing, in-home, the film is absolutely immaculate and at the same time gritty. While the CG-assisted Grand Moff Tarkin and Princess Leia read slightly plastic in the theater the performances they render slightly more believable when their faces aren’t the size of VW Van.

And like a reliable old VW Van, the bonus features here turned out to be a set that runs well but does not necessarily give cause for any major thrills. Despite the impressive list shown below, the features are essentially segmented pieces of what would have traditionally been an hour-long making-off featurette.

I’m actually a big fan of the more segmented approach to the making-of featurettes because it makes it really easy for you to dive and and drill down to the specific behind-the-scenes pieces you want to absorb. The problem with the features here is that this making-of featurette–in its more digestible millennial friendly mini-chunks–is about all there is consume here. Sure it’s a satisfying main course, but a hefty heaping of desserty extras like deleted scenes or even more insight into the reshoots and restructure of the film that had initially caused concern while the film was in production, would have been appreciated.

Still the bonus features we do get are quite wonderful. The Rogue Connections piece is a fun one offering a look at the deeper connections within the film and the broader universe. It’s a welcomed break from the more straight-forward procedural featurettes of which The Princess & The Governor was a standout. These two featured reminded me a lot of old television specials that took a peek behind the curtain at creating iconic show-stopping moments in film. The rest of the pieces were definitely interesting but about what you’d expect. Overall, I was not disappointed. Like any respectable geek, I WANT MORE!!!
